Chapter 63 Resolve
Putting a cast on Xavier's arm, the doctor was shaking and was very much intimidated by Xavier, who he never expected would be associated with the one-eyed demon.
If he knew that was the case, he would have been much more respectful to him in the first place, but he was surprised to find that the masked and hooded fighter was pretty friendly.
"Just calm down Doc. I'm not gonna hurt you or anything," he reassured him.
"I was just on edge after my fight and as long as you do your job, we're all good."
Nodding his head, it was still hard for him to ease up, but he wasn't jittering as much as before, and he slowly began to speak more to Xavier about himself.
-
"Your name's Fergus?!"
"Yeah," the doctor confirmed with a sheepish smile.
He had such an unusual name that it made Xavier feel better about his own, that was quite common, but not the most ordinary name out there.
And it was certainly not a name one would think belonged to him.
Or at least that's how he felt.
Xavier was quite a sophisticated name, and he was far from being that, but the name Fergus definitely suited the doctor, who wore thick glasses and had quite a fugly appearance.
"And how old are you?"
"41," he answered before starting to tell Xavier about his life.
As a father of two daughters that he sent both to a nice private school, and someone that lived in a nice home in the suburbs, he claimed that compared to most doctors, he was quite well off.
And that was thanks to the fight club, which paid him and other doctors that worked for them well.
However, it was a tough job.
There were times that fighters would come out of fights beaten to the verge of death, and he would work long nights, not being able to ever refuse to come into work.
And he also wasn't paid sick pay, and was too afraid to request a holiday, so his life was pretty much working at night and resting during the day.
Because of that, he felt as though he was drifting away from his family, and despite him making the sacrifice for them, never being around was putting quite a heavy strain on his relationship with them.
And opening up to Xavier, never really having anyone to talk to about his struggles, he regretted ever accepting the fight club's job offer.
He had many years of experience and studied for almost a decade to get his qualifications as a doctor, working in multiple hospitals and in multiple positions.
So getting a job elsewhere would be pretty easy, and one that paid quite well, but it probably wouldn't be enough to still cover his daughters' school fees and the lifestyle his family lived.
However, that wasn't why he hadn't done so already.
He would have left in a heartbeat if he could and found any other way to earn money legally.
But he feared what the Wolf Gang would do to him and his family.
Already seeing them kill multiple people and knowing how ruthless they were, how could he not be afraid for his life, claiming that it was the same for most 'ordinary' people that worked for the Wolf Gang.
The money was great and life would seem good at first, but slowly it would ruin everything they had in their lives, and breaking away from the Wolf Gang was impossible until he served them for at least 10 years.
Still having a few more years on his agreement with them, he was struggling to take it anymore and he couldn't speak to anyone else about it.
The other doctors and those that worked there were just as afraid as he was of the Wolf Gang, so wouldn't make any complaints to each other.
He couldn't tell the police, otherwise, he would get in trouble with not only the Wolf Gang, but also the police, and they also wouldn't be able to do much to the Wolf Gang.
And he couldn't burden his family with his struggles or worry his wife.
Which left Xavier, who listened to his life story and pitied him.
"A few years will go by quickly, and there's not much else I can tell you," Xavier said bluntly.
"If it makes you feel any better, everyone has their struggles in life. No matter how happy people appear on the outside, it is usually just a facade. And those that are truly happy are those that can provide and protect for those they care about. So just think about the future you are giving your daughters..."
Sighing, Xavier truly did feel for him, but he couldn't stick his neck out to help him and he wasn't in a position to be able to help him much.
Or at least not yet.
But in the back of his mind he was thinking, that once the Wolf Gang was in his clutches, he would make sure that those that were connected to the gang didn't suffer.
-
Thinking about his aim more deeply, he realised just how absurd it was for him to seek to take over the Wolf Gang in a matter of months.
They were so deeply rooted in the city, and especially in Brooklyn, which was their main territory, that if they were to be crushed or get into a war, the lives of thousands would be affected.
And not only would many would lose their sources of income, but it was deeper than that.
The drug smuggling and distribution that they were involved in, as well as all the official businesses that they owned, would also suffer, which could even have an effect on the economy as a whole.
Gangs that large were few, even in the entire world, so Xavier needed to not only uproot it with the help of Karim, but also maintain its foundation.
And if he managed to somehow get the one-eyed demon or one of the other executives to join his gang and help him achieve his goal, it would become much simpler.
But for the time being, all he could do was build his strength and that of his gang, preparing for what was to come.
And the Martial Arts Talent would help him to get much stronger at a faster rate than he ever could without it, while he felt as though it was what he needed more than anything.
One's body is their vessel and there is no swapping it, so in order to live the best life and never have to worry, one must strengthen their vessel and unleash its maximum potential.
And after coming across the one-eyed demon and his elite guards, Xavier realised just how far he could still go, and even then, with a gun aimed at one's head, there wasn't much that one could do.
But, maybe with the system, even surpassing human limits was possible, and as long as he continued completing missions, who knew what kind of rewards he could get?
-
The doctor had fallen silent after finishing his story and hearing Xavier's response, which had caused them both to think deeply about their purpose in life.
Snapping out of it, after clearing his mind, Xavier felt eager to fight again.
He felt the fire in his chest burning stronger than ever before and it just continued to get stronger, with the more burden he placed on his shoulders and the more he sought to achieve.
"Thanks, Doc."
"I was just doing my jo..."
"No, I mean, for sharing your story with me. It made me want to work harder."
He chuckled slightly, "I'm glad it could help you, but you seem young. Are you sure you still want to fight here? It would be better to quit before you go in too deep, and it would be best for you to stay as far away from that man as possible."
Xavier smiled.
"Did you see my fight?" he asked.
"Unfortunately not. I was dealing with a patient."
"Then just watch me from now on, old man. That man and anything else that gets in my way, I will overcome it all with these fists and the help of those that support me."
The doctor thought that Xavier was just spouting bullshit, but from the look in his eyes, he was truly being serious and seemed to believe every word he said.
So far, in a day he had already been able to achieve so much, and the night wasn't even over yet, so who knew what the future held?
And if he didn't like what it had in store for him, he would change it one way or another, whatever it took.
But not just for him.
For his mother, Achara, Connor, Zack, and Karim, who all placed their trust and hopes on him, as well as anyone else that he came to care about and wanted to protect.
And with his resolve and determination being stronger than ever, he was ready for his next fight, which came sooner than expected...
