Chapter 251: Magic Barrier

Chapter 251: Magic Barrier

Ass soon as he those words, the eyes of Whittaker's party members shuddered and they gulped in nervousness as they looked at dozens of Phantom cats crawling out of the overgrown bushes.

"Damn! We're surrounding!" Peter exclaimed with a tense expression on his face as the inky, black cats encircled them.

"What should we do? They will attack us any time," Yato said as he took a few steps back to step close to his teammate while looking at the cats that slowly moved covered the distance between them while staring at them with a ferocious glare.

While the beasts were taking their time to reach them, a thoughtful flicker flashed through Whittaker's snowy icy eyes, as he looked at the biggest Phantom cat, as well as the others, while using Inspect to obtain knowledge about the weakness and strength of these creatures.

'I'm pretty sure that the leader of the Phantom cats possesses human-like intelligence and it can break defense by using its second ability. It's also the one giving command to the rest of them. The horde of phantom cat will fall into a state of dismay once their leader died. Hmm, I will kill it immediately once I get the chance. For now, let's listen to what Shadow has to say as he is the leader of our party," Whittaker thought as he pulled out a sword with aqua blue patterns stretching from one end to the other from his hunter's ring. One could see that a good luck string was tied around the dark and blue hilt.

The stats of the rest of the beasts were worse, and Whittaker inclined his head, his gaze sweeping past all the phantom cats encircling them.

As he looked at them with an ice-cold stare, the phantom cat nervously retreated by a few steps. The magical beasts could feel that Whittaker was a threat to them, one that could easily take their lives. However, they began rushing at them without thinking once the leader of the phantom cats commanded them to attack.

The eyes of Peter and the other two low-level mages opened wide as they looked at the beasts with a tense expression on their faces.

"Don't panic. These ferocious beasts might seem powerful but they aren't nearly as strong as they look. In the world of beasts, only the weak ones like to form packs. Use your spells to shield yourselves. Counterattack once they are in the range of your elemental attacks." Shadow exclaimed as he stepped forward with an inky, black dagger held in his right hand and a crimson blade clutched in his offhand. "I will try to distract them."

A moment later, Shadow clashed against the beasts. The sharp claw strikes of the beasts were dodged at once as he magnificently maneuvered his blade. Not a single movement could be considered a waste. At the same time, he slashed daggers at their limbs, causing a deep cut in their hind legs, significantly decreasing their speed.

Some of them rushed towards the mages behind him.

A moment later, one of the cats suddenly lunged at him and swung its claw at Shadow with sluggish movements.

Shadow remained calm despite the sudden attack, as he has already seen it coming from some miles away.

"This attack will be the reason for your death!" Shadow's said as he looked at the foolish cat with disdain and murderous intent seeping out of his black eyes. He sidestepped the beast's sharp claw gleaming under the rays of light by shifting his body to the right

Right after dodging the beast's attack, Shadow's right hand jerked as he stabbed the phantom cat in the chest with his dagger.

As soon as he killed one of them, the party gulped their nervousness.

"Let's use the shield unification technique that teacher Ruka taught us!" Peter exclaimed as he then looked at Whittaker. "Try to follow out hand signs."

"Sure," Whittaker replied with confidence as he was sure that replicating hand signs and performing them immediately wouldn't be difficult for him.

Following Shadow's instructions, they immediately clapped their hands together and performed a set of hand signs within a few seconds.

"Pure-mana spell: Unified Magic Barrier!" As soon as they performed the hand signs to cast the spell, mana burst forth from their bodies, and one could see several lines of blue energy manifesting around them in an instant. These lines immediately intertwined and tightened to become something like a semi-transparent spherical shield.

At the very moment, a lot of phantom casts pounced at them, antagonized.

As the phantom cats crashed on the semi-transparent shield, Whittaker could see cracks appearing on it.

"Peter and Ruth, you both take care of the beasts attacking the shield. Don't let them break it!" Whittaker said as his eyes squinted in consideration.

"Got it!" Peter exclaimed as his spellbook opened up and released a volley of icy shards with sharp ends. The sharps ends of the ice shard didn't manage to penetrate the bodies of the phantom cats as their furs proved to be stronger. However, the icy shards trajectory was unpredictable, and although the cats were moving hurriedly, some of the shards penetrated their eyes, piercing through flesh and veins to puncture the brain, killing them at the same time.

"Buy me some time. I am preparing a stronger attack. It needs a few moments to charge up," Ruth said as the mana reserved in his mana pool decreased rapidly, and at the same time, the golden shine emitting out of his opened spellbook intensified.

Peter knew he couldn't attack as he charging a fire elemental attack. Thus, he drank a potion to recover his mana while launching another attack towards the beasts.

"What about me?" Yato asked.

"You will be providing support to Shadow," Whittaker said to Yato before stepping out of the magic barrier.

"Leave it to me." Yato's said the Incarnation of his elemental spell. Immediately after, a blade made out of wind materialized around him. He activated telekinesis by performing a set of hand signs. Now, he could control the movement of the sharp azure blade.

The azure wind blade shot out of the semi-transparent spherical shield, and before the phantom cats attacking Shadow could even react, it procured a deep cut in their necks.
