Chapter 5
C5 – Harvest
After a considerable wait, the cicada, having gorged itself on tree sap, ceased its chirping as if to catch its breath. Yet, in that moment of respite, the green mantis lurking behind sprung into action. Its scythe-like forelimbs snapped out with lightning speed, ensnaring the cicada in an instant!
The mantis descended upon the cicada, zealously employing its deadly appendages to methodically strip away the cicada’s life. Unbeknownst to the mantis, however, was the fact that an ant had set its sights on it as its next victim.
Lee Tian acted swiftly, targeting the mantis’s most vulnerable spot: its slender neck. Using spider silk, he deftly ascended to the mantis. With agility, he circled the mantis’s neck, entangling it in the sticky thread, ensuring it could not flee.
The mantis, sensing imminent peril, failed to retract its limbs to confront Lee Tian. Perhaps it underestimated the small ant or was unwilling to abandon a larger quarry for a lesser threat. This miscalculation would come at a grave cost.
Indeed, Lee Tian’s formidable ant jaws effortlessly severed the mantis’s neck, sending its head tumbling to the forest floor.
“Ding! Host, I detected that you have slain a Low Rank Level 4 Mantis. Experience Points +4, Evolution Points +0!” announced the System Beep.
“Ding! Host, congratulations on acquiring the Mantis’s innate ability: ‘Harvest’!” followed another prompt.
These notifications echoed in Lee Tian’s mind, but before he could revel in his triumph or attend to the wounded cicada, a sense of impending danger washed over him. Without hesitation, he leaped from the branch, gracefully alighting on the one below.
As he settled on the new perch, a yellow sparrow, as large as a small cabbage, swooped in. It landed on the branch Lee Tian had just vacated, pecked at the remains, and flew off with both the mantis’s carcass and the cicada. Lee Tian watched the bird retreat, his heart pounding. A moment’s delay, and he would have been the sparrow’s midday meal.
He let out a huge sigh of relief. That hunt had truly been a close call.
As he lifted his hands to wipe away sweat, he was shocked to find that his hands had morphed into scythe-like mantis appendages!
Immediately, he remembered the Mantis talent “Harvest” he had just acquired.
Clearly, these scythe hands were the embodiment of that talent.
The scythe hands glimmered with a subtle chill, appearing incredibly sharp and sturdy.
Lee Tian decided to test them out on a nearby leaf, swinging his new appendages to slice through it!
Instantly, two sharp, clear sounds echoed. The leaf had been neatly divided into three pieces, drifting down from the twig to the ground.
Yet, Lee Tian wasn’t quite satisfied. Gazing at the now-bare twig, he felt a surge of whimsy and swung his scythe hands once more!
Two more crisp sounds followed.
The tender end of the twig was effortlessly severed by Lee Tian, but the tougher base only yielded halfway to his limited strength.
Still, for an ant to possess such an ability was downright extraordinary!
Lee Tian admired his Scythe Hand with delight and chuckled, “With these Scythe Hands, I’ll be unstoppable in the insect world!”
He raised his Scythe Hands, and as the sunlight filtered through the leaves, they cast a scattering of sparkling light.
