Chapter 23: Lord Valenbrook's little Angel

Seraphina sat on the massive bed in her room, her delicate fingers tracing the intricate designs on the quilt. Usually, she felt detached from the world, indifferent to the constant buzz of her noble life. But today, there was a flicker of something different, something that unsettled her. Was it... excitement? She couldn't quite place it. Perhaps it was the date with Rex, something completely foreign to her.

She also had another reason why she wanted to go...

As her thoughts drifted, imagining how the evening might go, a cold, commanding voice interrupted her reverie.

"Who was that?" The voice cut through the air like ice.

Seraphina's eyes widened slightly before she turned slowly, her face composed. Standing in the doorway was her father, Lord Valenbrook. His tall, imposing figure cast a long shadow into the room. His silver hair, long and impeccably groomed, caught the dim light, and his piercing hazel eyes glowed with authority.

"No one serious," Seraphina responded flatly, trying to sound disinterested, but the slight tinge of excitement in her voice betrayed her. She straightened up and met his gaze.

Lord Valenbrook's lips curled into a smile—cold and calculated. "No one serious? And yet my little angel sounds so... thrilled. I wonder who this insignificant boy might be." He took several steps into the room, his presence alone making the air feel heavy, each footstep deliberate, filled with the weight of authority and dominance.

Seraphina's face hardened, matching his intensity. "Father, I'm not a child anymore. You can't just barge into my room whenever you feel like it."

His smile deepened, turning almost sinister. "Oh? So my little angel believes she's a grown-up now?" His tone was mocking as he continued walking toward her, his eyes never leaving hers.

Seraphina didn't flinch. She had spent years learning to control her emotions under the pressure of his suffocating presence. Her expression remained grim, but inside, her heart raced slightly faster.

Valenbrook reached the edge of her bed and stood towering over her. "Whoever this Rex is, you'll cancel that date."

Seraphina's eyes narrowed. "I'm not canceling anything."

Her father's amusement faded, and the room grew eerily silent. Valenbrook's eyes sharpened, turning cold. He didn't have to raise his voice to command respect; his very presence demanded it. "You're wasting your time with such frivolities. You have greater responsibilities, your powers, your legacy. A noble like you shouldn't be wasting time with commoners."

Seraphina's heart twinged with frustration, but she kept her voice steady. "Rex isn't just anyone. He's...."

"Irrelevant," her father interrupted, his smile vanishing entirely. "You will not go on this date, Seraphina. End of discussion."

Then, without warning, the temperature in the room spiked dramatically. Lord Valenbrook released his aura, an overwhelming, oppressive heat that filled the space. The walls seemed to radiate with it, and the air itself became thick and stifling. His power was undeniable, and for a moment, it was hard to breathe.

Seraphina's skin prickled under the sudden heat, her body tensing involuntarily, but she refused to back down. She rose slowly from the bed, standing eye-to-eye with her father. She could feel the intensity of his power pressing down on her, but her resolve only hardened.

"You are not my master, Father," Seraphina said, her voice steady, but her eyes blazing with defiance. "I won't be treated like a tool or a puppet to serve your will."

Her father's eyes narrowed, the heat in the room intensifying further. "You forget your place, Seraphina. Everything you have is because of your lineage, your power, my power. You will obey."

Seraphina's jaw clenched, her fists tightening at her sides. Despite the stifling heat, she felt a wave of icy determination wash over her. She took a step closer, her defiance unwavering.

"I won't obey," she said coldly. "You may think you can control everything, but not me. Not anymore."

Valenbrook's gaze hardened, and his voice dropped into a dangerously low tone. "You dare defy me? After everything I've given you?"

Seraphina's lip curled in disdain. "You've given me nothing but a gilded cage." Her voice turned icy, mirroring his aura. "And now, I'm telling you, no. I'll do as I please. Rex is my decision, not yours."

Her father's aura pulsed dangerously, the heat becoming almost unbearable, but Seraphina held her ground. Sweat dripped from her brow, but she refused to back down.

"You ungrateful little....."

"A brute," Seraphina cut him off sharply, her voice filled with venom. "You're a brute who only knows how to bully people into submission. But I won't be bullied. Not anymore."

The tension in the room was palpable, the heat almost suffocating. For a moment, it seemed like her father might lash out, his aura growing even more oppressive, but then, just as quickly as it had come, the heat dissipated. Lord Valenbrook's eyes bore into her, cold and calculating, but something shifted.

He straightened, his face returning to its stoic mask. "Very well," he said quietly, his tone menacing despite the calm exterior. "Do as you wish, but don't expect me to clean up your mess when this... boy disappoints you."

With that, he turned on his heel and left the room, his presence lingering like a dark cloud even after he was gone.

Seraphina stood there, her heart pounding in her chest. She took a deep breath, her body still buzzing from the confrontation. She had won this round, but she knew her father wouldn't let this go so easily.

But for the first time in a long time, she felt like she had made a choice that was truly her own.

"Brute," she muttered under her breath, shaking her head as she sat back down on the bed.

Her Father had always been someone who valued power over relationships. He had been like that after discovering her potential. Everything was about power, responsibility." After the last war between humans and beasts, his attitude even grew stronger. Even when her mother, his wife died during the war, he didn't even flinch.

"She was weak, never worthy of the position of being a Valenbrook's Lady" He said on the night she died.

"Being a Valenbrook? What does that even mean?" She muttered.

If being a Valenbrook meant she would never be ale to make her own choices, then she despised the name! She didn't ask to be born in it in the first place!

She knew her father would not allow her to go on this date and defying him was one thing she enjoyed doing. That was also a part of the reason she wanted to go on this date
