Chapter 37: Frienemy
Chapter 37: Frienemy
After seeing Malene off, Laz went back inside to finish his shift. Although he had to listen to a few remarks from both Grandpa and Uncle Chu, he didn't mind. His thoughts were a bit of a mess however.
He didn't know this girl and he didn't have a connection to her, minus being different, so he didn't know why she would be hostile towards him. Although he thought she was rather attractive, he wasn't dumb enough to think it could be love at first sight, or hatred for that matter. The only thought he could put together was that she didn't want anything to do with others like them.
He figured that she probably had a story behind it. The powers seemed to have developed at somewhat different times for different people, so he didn't know when she got hers. Since she came from a big city, he could only guess that there were many more people who started turning weird.
Other than this, he had no clue. All the same, he wasn't going to bother with her since she made her point clear. The only thing he was going to do was to take care not to be alone with her. No matter how many times he played the scene over and over in his mind, he had no idea what he got cut with. He knew she had something metal due to the smell and it was sharp considering how it cut, but that was it.
After Laz finally got home later, he remembered the piece of paper he got from Kennedy and decided he would put it into his phone. Although he never carried the phone with him, he always kept it charged. So far, he only had a few numbers stored in it, but none of those were numbers for friends. It felt weird to put her number in there, but he had to follow through with this.
After putting his number in, he hesitated texting her for quite a while. He would never call if he could text which is the same for most people. Like all 14 year olds, this was a big and very nerve-wracking situation as far as he was concerned.
'What do I say? Laz thought as he sat on the old recliner and stared at his phone, hoping it would give him an answer.
'Short and cool or long and mysterious?"
The first text was the most important and he didn't want to leave a bad impression. At least, that's what he first thought of. After hesitating for a while, he finally figured something out. This girl didn't give a damn about him and he didn't exactly like her either, so why should he care what he said. Just because they had to work together, if you could call it that, didn't mean they had to be friends.
:It's Laz:
He waited for a bit before she responded back.
:What took you so long. I thought you lost the paper or something.:
:I had to work at my real job.:
:Your real job?:
:Yeah.:
:Whatever. Got your info, clear your calendar for next weekend. I've got to go somewhere and your going to be there too.:
:You going to tell me what I should prepare for?:
:It's a party. I'm bringing stuff to help some rich kids get their rocks off all weekend.:
:We have to be there all weekend?:
:No. Just Friday for the delivery and that night to mingle. It will be a chance to connect with some higher paying clients, but poor shits like us arn't invited to stay longer.:
:Sounds kind of harsh, but whatever. I was told we would just be pushing some weed.:
:Are you fucking serious? We will make 100 times more at this party alone than we would selling weed all year.:
:I don't really care. This isn't exactly what I wanted to be doing with my high school life.:
:Oh? I'm sorry? Are you too good for this shit? Well too fucking bad. You told my cousin you would watch my back on this and that is what I am going to pay you for. If I need you, you need to be there. Clear?:
:Whatever you say.:
Laz really didn't like this girl to begin with so this just made his impression of her worse. He didn't know what he would be getting into, but somehow he felt like it was going to be trouble.
:Wear something imposing. And find a mask of some sort, I don't think that you should show your face. Now we just need to find some sort of a ride there.:
:I've got something we can use.:
:How the hell do you have a licsence?:
:I don't, but I've got a ride. Besides, it will help you fit in with your spoiled rich kid look.:
:Seriously?:
:You got something else in mind?:
:No.:
:Then this should work out ok. I've got something to wear as well.: Laz texted back, thinking of the mask that Tony had left him with.
:Alright, pick me up in front of the school around 7 pm next Friday night.:
:Why they school?:
:Why the question?:
:Fine. Also, bring a motorcycle helmet.:
:Really? Alright, this might work. If this goes well, we both will make some mad cash that night.:
:Works for me.:
:Good. Don't forget, I'm going to need you on this. This is a big chance, but it's also risky.:
:How so?:
:I will explain later. If you need something, text me but don't talk to me at school. We don't know each other. Got it?:
:Yeah.:
:Good, see you at school.:
Kennedy sent an emoji smiley face with her last text and even if Laz didn't realize it, he was actually kind of excited to have been chatting with a girl on his phone. He never realized that it would be kind of fun. Sure, she was a drug dealing, super powered, hot girl, but it still counts. Laz couldn't help but smile and think a bit about her. He was stuck with her no matter if he wanted to be or not, but for the first time, he didn't think it was so bad. Had he known that she was texting him from inside he bath tub, he probably would have had a completely different feeling.
'I'm not sure what to think about him, but at least I know he can fight. This is going to be hell,' was Kennedy's thought as she climbed out from the tub, wrapping the dark blue towel around her curvy and supple body. Although she didn't have peaks as enormous as someone like Demi, she was clearly much better endowed compared to other girls her age.
The bathroom was a bit run down with bits of paint missing from the walls, a cracked sink, faded mirror and slightly rusted faucets, but it was still fairly clean. As Kennedy hung her head to the side, she started brushing out her back length golden blonde hair while looking at herself in the mirror. Perhaps to others she would look hot, but she hated having to look at herself.
Knock Knock
The gentle knock on the door brought Kennedy back to herself as she straighten up.
"What is it mom?"
"Where did you say you were going this weekend?"
"No mom, next weekend. I'm going to a dance and then going to stay the night over at Julie's house."
"Oh, ok dear. Are you ok?"
"I'm fine mom, don't worry. You get the money I left?"
"Yeah, yeah. Thanks sweetie. I know you work hard to support us."
"It's fine mom."
"You know... I never would have let him stay here that long if I knew.."
"MOM, IT'S FINE." Kennedy said, slamming the hair brush down on the sink. The loud smack noise made Kennedy's mom jump on the other side of the door and talk a bit quieter.
"Ok, you go have fun with your friends at the dance. Let me know when you get home ok?"
"Yeah. I will." Kennedy picked up the hair brush and continued brushing her hair, but she was no longer looking in the mirror.
-------------------
The rest of the week came and went by quickly with nothing else really happening. Laz hadn't texted Kennedy again as he was waiting for either the day before they were suppose to meet or for her to text him first. Besides jogging after work every night, Laz kept the pretty much same schedule of school, work and then homework, not leaving time for much else. Waking up to a sexy woman moaning from his cell, Laz noticed two things. One, he still didn't change his ring tone and two, Saturday morning was unseasonably warm. Laz couldn't help but wake up sweaty as he noticed it seemed to be very humid along with being hot. For October weather, this was not a normal day.
After getting up, showering and getting dressed, Laz made his way downstairs to see his Grandpa before heading off to Bill's. Before he knocked on the door however, he noticed his Grandpa's truck was gone and decided to just get going. As he was riding down the road, he couldn't help but think how different things had become since the last time he went to Bill's. With so many things happening every day, he thought that he just didn't have enough time to just relax and enjoy things like a drive on his own dirt bike.
Getting to Bill's, he noticed his Grandpa's truck parked next to the house and decided to go over a knock to let Bill know he was there. Even though it was still early, the heat was pretty intense at this point and Laz couldn't help sweating a bit.
As Bill opened the door, he noticed Laz standing there and only now did he remember it was Saturday again.
"Laz, welcome. I will be out in just a moment."
"Hey Grandpa Bill, is my grandpa in there too?" Laz asked, peeking inside.
"Yeah, but he's been a bit hot these days so he's just cooling off in the AC."
"Oh, ok. Just let him know I'm here once he's feeling better."
"Sure, no problem Laz."
As they walked away from the trailer, there were strange and painful groans coming from the back bedroom. The soundproofing was so effective though that even if Laz was paying attention, he wouldn't be able to hear anything.
Laz would have been surprised to know that his grandpa was laying down on the bed while his whole body was surrounded by blocks of Ice. Despite this, it seemed like he was going to keep getting warmer.
