Chapter 29: The Strange Gopher

Chapter 29: The Strange Gopher

"Stop!"

William recognized the body that was dragged away. It was the little boy next door.

The pulling did not stop after hearing William's voice, but the chattering of the neighbors stopped.

Hiss! Hiss!

The strange pulling sound was many times louder in the soundless environment. Everyone heard it, and the strange sound made their hairs stand up.

Not only that but there was also a terrifying chewing sound coming from the Sunken Square opposite them.

"Nimble! Nimble!"

The sound was getting closer and closer as if someone were eating something and walking towards them.

"Ah!"

No one knew who shouted the first, but all the survivors shouted and dodged in fear, not daring to get close to the Sunken Square.

Dong! Dong! Dong!

The sound of footsteps was getting closer and closer. No one knew what was approaching, but some powerful pressure spread along with the sound of chewing.

Even the survivors who had run far away could feel the suffocating feeling of being submerged in the sea.

William frowned slightly and struck above the little boy's head with his palm. The Dragon Breath in his hand instantly ignited something, and then flames spread toward the direction of the sound of footsteps.

There was only a little light from the fire. William looked below and saw that there was a transparent fishing line above the little boy's head.

"It is just a trick!"

William pursed his lips and took the initiative to walk toward the Sunken Square.

He had long suspected that these unintelligent monsters could not have appeared suddenly. There must be a manipulator behind them.

But William did not expect that the manipulator's goal was to steal the corpse.

He was instantly stunned when he stood in front of the square.

In front of him was a huge, pitch-black-furred gopher!

Its fur was as hard as steel, and it even reflected light. It looked dangerous.

There were many bloodstains on the black fur. Obviously, the strange gopher had already devoured many people.

Its mouth was still moving as if it were chewing something.

It saw William, and its pitch-black eyes stared at him. Suddenly, its triangular mouth opened.

"Puff!"

Whoosh!

A white thing flew out.

William looked and saw that it was a white leg bone!

He dodged and then began to analyze the monster.

It was not just a monster. It was an intelligent monster. It was just that William could not figure out how the monster managed to sneak into the fortress.

"It has intelligence and likes to eat humans. It can also use some unknown means to control humanoid monsters. Its aura is not weaker than Mr. George's, but it does not have the pressure of an Earth Rank monster like the Vengeful Wraith's leader. It should not be an Earth Rank monster, but it is close to that rank."

William mumbled in a voice that only he could hear. His thoughts spun as he analyzed the gopher through the information he had.

That was also why he was able to kill ten [ Five-Legged Flame Lizards ] in the wilderness with only his F-Class Endowed Supernatural Ability. He could use the information he had to build a simple model in his mind. Then, he could determine if he could fight the opponent. What are his chances of winning were? What he should guard against, and where his advantage was?

He would attack if he had a higher chance of winning and would immediately change his target if he could not fight against it.

William did not want to lose this habit even though he had become stronger now. After all, a rational battle was much better than a mindless massacre.

"Gulp! Gulp!"

The huge gopher was trying to grab in William's direction. The red moon hung in the sky, shining on the earth and reflecting a red illumination. It made the strange gopher look even more terrifying when it shone on it.

"So disgusting!" Vilya could not help but say.

William frowned. "A monster that we don't know?"

The strange gopher in front of him was nearly four meters tall, standing in the Sunken Square. However, the top of its head was one head higher than William's, and it was looking at him at the same level.

William would probably have to jump up to hit its knees if both of them were standing at the same height.

Most importantly, William tried to recall the Monster Atlas, but he could not find any monster like the one in front of him.

Could it be a monster that had never appeared and yet recorded?

"Back off!"

William said in a low voice, and then calculated the position where the Gopher's claw would dig into. His fist with the Dragon Breath swung down fiercely on the claw after he dodged it.

Boom!

In an instant, the Dragon Breath stained on the gopher's claw, and it continued to spread, and a raging fire started in a moment.

But the fire came and went quickly. The fire dissipated in the blink of an eye, and the claw was unharmed.

"That's not right! It's the hair!"

William's eyes were sharp, and he noticed the hair that was as hard as steel rose and fell again the moment the fire started. It formed a defense similar to armor, blocking all the Dragon's Breath.

"Hiss!" William gasped, "What kind of monster is this? It can resist the Dragon Breath. No, it should be because the power of my Dragon Breath is too weak. It might be able to burn it into ashes if I were to spew out a large mouthful of Dragon Breath. Just a bit of Dragon Breath attached to my fist might not be enough."

William ran as he analyzed the reason.

It was not that he wanted to run. But that the gopher had made another attack. Its huge claws swept over, and the floor tiles cracked, and trees were destroyed wherever it passed.

Vilya's frowned as she stood by the side. She had naturally seen that William's punch had always been successful when facing the monster, but it did not affect the strange gopher.

"No! I have to help him!" Vilya's entire body was emitting light of spiritual energy. [Devil's Eye of Hell] sensed its master's will and slowly rose into the air.

Buzz!

The pressure was emitted once again from the huge eyes. However, she controlled the range and enveloped only the huge gopher this time.

However, the huge gopher's claws did not stop at all like what Vilya expected. Instead, it turned its eyes over and stared at Vilya with its pitch-black pupils.

Vilya felt her entire body stiffen. It was not that the strange gopher had done anything to her. But it was because its pupils were too frightening.

William took some time to look back. He immediately felt that the situation was bad when he saw that Vilya was standing so close to the strange gopher and was looking at it. He quickly shouted, "Run!"

As soon as he said that, the strange gopher's triangular mouth moved up and down. Then it suddenly opened. Its speed was so fast one would not have time to react.

A sharp and ear-piercing cry sounded the next second.

"Ah!"

The sharp cry came from the gopher, making the air distort. Vilya's hair was blown back as she faced the cry. Her eyes were instantly bloodshot, and blood flowed out of his ears.

Buzz!

[ Devil's Eye of Hell ] flew in front of its master, emitting pressure as it tried to block the sound for its master.

However, it was not good at defense. It threw back into its master's arms by the strange sound wave attack in less than a second, and the two of them rolled off to aside.

"Vilya! "William shouted. He did not have time to hide his trump card. He jumped up, and his whole body emitted a spiritual light in the air. He was ready to let out his attack at any time with the Dragon Breath in his mouth.
