Chapter 113: Revelation
September 7th, 2025.
Bridget decided it was the right time for her to call her contacts in China. She grabbed her phone and dialed a number only known to her.
"Ms. von Reimann, how can I help you?"
The one that she is contacting right now is a man who dominates the cyberspace of China, the superior of them all. Known in the digital world as "The Architect," he has his fingers in various technological advancements and cybersecurity networks across Asia. His real name, however, is seldom used or known to the public.
"Bridget here. I'm reaching out concerning a matter of mutual interest. It appears that a group of hackers has been making persistent attempts to infiltrate a company's network that I'm affiliated with. We have reason to believe the operation is originating from within your territory," Bridget explained calmly.
There was a brief pause on the other end of the line.
"Intriguing. And why, Ms. von Reimann, do you believe I might be inclined to assist with this matter?" The Architect's tone was neither friendly nor hostile, a perfect balance of curiosity and caution.
"Because I will pay you, isn't it what you want?" Bridget replied simply.
"It is, but Ms. von Reimann, it's not only about the money but also the purpose. However, considering our past collaborations have been beneficial for both parties, I'm willing to proceed. I'll need all the details you can provide on these hackers and their methods," The Architect replied after a moment.
Bridget proceeded to share every detail she had about the cyberattacks, including timestamps, types of breaches, and any peculiarities noticed by the defending IT team. She emphasized the strategic importance of quickly neutralizing this threat, not only to protect her interests but also to prevent any potential fallout that could affect diplomatic relations.
"Very well, Ms. von Reimann. I'll initiate an investigation with my network. While I cannot promise immediate results, understand that I will prioritize this request. You will have your information as soon as it becomes available. In the meantime, ensure your defenses remain strong.
Sometimes the best way to catch a predator is to make it believe it has the upper hand," The Architect concluded.
"Thank you. I'll await your findings," she said before ending the call.
After hanging up the call with the Architect, she dialed Michael's number
After hanging up the call with the Architect, Bridget dialed Michael's number. It rang twice before he picked up.
"Michael Reyes speaking."
"Bridget von Reimann here. I wanted to update you on the situation with the hackers."
"Ah, Bridget. Yes, I've been meaning to ask. It's been a week. Any progress?"
"I've been in contact with a key figure in China, someone with considerable influence in the cybersecurity sphere. He's agreed to help us identify and possibly neutralize the hackers. However, he's warned that it might take some time to gather concrete information."
Michael paused, digesting the news. "That's more than we had before. How confident are you in this contact of yours?"
"He's been reliable in the past. While immediate results may not be guaranteed, I believe if anyone can get to the bottom of this, it's him."
"Understood. Meanwhile, we've been doubling down on our cybersecurity measures here. The team's on high alert, and we've been running continuous sweeps for any further intrusion attempts. But knowing there's movement on identifying the perpetrators is reassuring."
"Keep your defenses up, Michael. Our contact also mentioned the importance of appearing vulnerable to lure them into a trap. It might be a useful strategy."
"I'll consider that. It's a fine line to walk, but we might not have much choice. Anything else I should be aware of?"
"That's all for now. I'll keep you posted with any new developments. Let's hope for a swift resolution."
"Thanks, Bridget. Your help in this matter is invaluable. I miss you!" Michael cooed.
Bridget's face flushed slightly at Michael's remark.
"Michael…" Bridget said his name bashfully.
"I want to see you, I miss you," Michael continued.
Bridget took a moment to compose herself, the seriousness of their current situation momentarily overshadowed by personal feelings. "I miss you too, Michael. Once all this is sorted out, I promise we'll see each other. Right now, though, we need to focus on the task at hand. The safety and security of our company's data and infrastructure are paramount."
There was a brief silence as Michael absorbed her words, the gravity of their professional responsibilities settling back in.
"You're right, Bridget. The situation with these hackers is critical. I appreciate your efforts and the steps you're taking to resolve this. It's just... hard not having you here."
"We'll get through this, Michael. We always do," Bridget assured him confidently. "And when we do, we'll have all the time in the world to catch up. For now, let's keep our focus on the issue at hand. I'll update you as soon as I hear anything from my contact in China."
"Agreed. And thank you, Bridget. Not just for the help with the hackers, but for everything. Your support means a lot to me," Michael said sincerely.
"Anytime, Michael. We're in this together. Take care, and I'll be in touch soon."
September 24th, 2025.
Bridget received a call from the Architect, breaking the silence of her focused work environment.
"Ms. von Reimann, we've made significant progress," the Architect began without preamble. "Our investigation has led us to the identification of the primary individual behind the cyberattacks on SolaraTech."
Bridget leaned in, her interest piqued. "And who might that be?" she inquired, her voice steady, betraying none of the anticipation she felt.
"The hacker goes by the alias 'Shadow,'" the Architect revealed. "He was hired by CinkoSolar Holdings. It seems they're attempting to gain a competitive edge by undermining SolaraTech's cybersecurity."
The revelation struck Bridget with a mix of vindication and concern. The involvement of CinkoSolar Holdings added a layer of complexity to the situation, raising questions about how to proceed.
"Thank you for this information," Bridget responded after a moment to collect her thoughts. "This is exactly what we needed. How reliable is this intel?"
"Highly reliable. We've cross-referenced the data through multiple sources and confirmed Shadow's involvement with CinkoSolar. There's little doubt about the accuracy of our findings," the Architect assured her.
Bridget nodded to herself, processing the implications. "This is delicate. We'll need to handle the next steps carefully to ensure we don't escalate the situation further."
"Indeed, Ms. von Reimann. I suggest you proceed with caution. My role in this matter is concluded, but should you require further assistance, do not hesitate to reach out," the Architect offered.
"I appreciate your help, Architect. Your expertise has been invaluable in uncovering this threat. We'll take it from here," Bridget said, a plan already forming in her mind on how to address the issue with Michael and possibly take legal or diplomatic action against CinkoSolar Holdings.
"Very well. I wish you the best in resolving this matter. Goodbye, Ms. von Reimann."
