It was a cold winter morning. The sun rose up at a lazy speed, casting a beam of gentle light into the advanced ward at Family Mu’s hospital.

Shangguan Ning’s internal clock woke her up from sleep at 6:30 am.

The first thing that she saw was a patch of white clean roof. Smell of antiseptic, mingled with the lovely scent of lilies, was in the air.

Shangguan Ning felt dizzy as she lay in the bed. Where was she?

She was about to lift her hand to brush away the hair that blocked her view when a large, warm hand took hold of her fingers, instead.

Her movement woke up Jing Yichen, who had been resting by her bedside.

He raised his head and met Shangguan Ning’s surprised look. He let out a tiny smile seeing her eyes widen. “Up now?”

His voice was hoarse, but still sounded nice. His smile was brighter than the sun’s rays filtering through the window.

Shangguan Ning’s heart skipped a beat. She tried to distract herself and asked softly, “What is this place?”

“Family Mu’s hospital. You fainted last night.”

Hearing Jing Yichen’s words, Shangguan Ning suddenly remembered what had happened the night before. All she could recall was that she had been crying in his arms. But she hadn’t imagined that she would pass out.

This was an awkward situation.

She had lost her control last night, and the sadness that she held in heart for years had burst out. At that time, she had wished for a pair of strong arms to lean into. Thinking back now, she realized that it might have been slightly improper on her part to wish for something like that.

Judging from his current looks, it seemed that he had been besides her throughout the night. A feeling of gratitude arose in her heart. She knew that now she owed him another favor.

“Thank you so much for last night. You helped me again.”

Shangguan Ning spoke the words as she tried to sit up. She planned to pull out her hand from Jing Yichen’s palm by doing this. She was trying to do it without drawing his attention.

But Jing Yichen sensed it. Instead of releasing it, he increased the grip on her hand. Her hand was smooth, tender and white. It was really soft, almost boneless. It felt nice to hold it in his hand.

Shangguan Ning’s hand was trapped by his large hand, and the warmth from his palm reached her, heating her up and making her flush.

A small, involuntary laugh slipped out of Jing Yichen’s mouth upon seeing her face turn into an overripe apple instantly. “Why do you blush so easily? I am just holding your hand, not swallowing you up.”

Saying these words, he let go of her hand, turned around and walked out of the ward.

She was startled.

Did he just tease her?

She stayed surprised for quite a while lying in that sickbed and that expression stayed on her face, even when she got up. She washed herself with the disposal sanitary appliance at the hospital.

Although the breakfast provided at Family Mu’s hospital was elaborate and nutritious, yet Jing Yichen didn’t touch a thing.

Shangguan Ning ate a little and found it tasty. She now had a better understanding of his food criteria.

Shangguan Ning got into Jing Yichen’s car after breakfast, and they went back to Landscape Compound.

The moment he sat in his seat, Jing Yichen’s cell phone started to ring. He glanced at the cell phone and ignored it. Instead, he focused all his attention upon driving the car.

Shangguan Ning, who was sitting in the passenger’s seat, accidentally spotted the name on the screen. It said “Grandma.”

She found it weird that Jing Yichen didn’t answer his grandma’s call. But they were not close enough yet, for her to ask him the reason for it. So she sat there in silence, pretending as if she never heard the call.

The cell phone rang for more than ten times. Jing Yichen was finally defeated by the persistence of the caller. He answered the call with a cold expression on the face.

“You bad grandson. Why didn’t you pick up the phone earlier?” An old lady’s voice, full of vitality came from the other side of the phone, the moment it was picked up.

Jing Yichen’s face darkened. But he asked in a light tone, “What do you want?”

“I heard that you sent a helicopter to Anan’s school. What happened? The newspaper said that a rich man flew in a helicopter to pick up his girlfriend at school. Have you got a girlfriend?”

He knew that the Old Lady would definitely ask him about that. It was a surprise that she had waited for two days before asking him.

He lied without blinking, “Anan was framed. I went there to support her.”

But the Old Lady wasn’t a fool. She didn’t buy her grandson’s trick. She also knew that her grandson would never tell the truth.

So she started with her usual nagging. “I had told you that I would set you up with a girl. Come and have dinner at home tonight. Both of you can interact.”

Before she could finish the sentence, Jing Yichen interrupted her coldly. “I am not available.”

Then he hung up.

Shangguan Ning could hear everything the Old Lady said sitting next to Jing Yichen. The call had been loud.

She found it funny that a cold, handsome man like him still needed to go through the process of being urged to get married.

He suddenly sped up the car as if he were pulling a prank. Shangguan Ning was caught off guard and let out a cry. The silver luxurious sports car galloped, exceeding and almost scratching every car as it passed them. It was more exciting than a car race.

Shangguan Ning was slightly pale by the time they reached the Landscape Compound.

Jing Yichen was relieved, but also regretted the impulse. He thought that it might have been over the top. He wondered if the action had frightened her.

“Are you... alright?”

He sounded careful as if not wanting to anger her. Shangguan Ning’s heart softened instantly.

Actually, she hadn’t been scared. It was just that she had not experienced this kind of excitement in a long time and it felt great. She just couldn’t believe that a stable, mature, and indifferent man like Jing Yichen would ever do anything like this.

What a petty-minded guy! She laughed at him for being pushed for a marriage and he had repaid her like this.

She threw a look at him and said three words. “What a child!”

Jing Yichen let out a sigh of relief seeing her expression – she was not angry.

He realised that he had behaved quite childishly today. It was something only a 22 year old young guy would do, not someone ten years older.

But for some reason, he always felt relaxed next to her and ended up behaving slightly irrational.

A small smile appeared at the corners of his lips. “Yes, I haven’t been childish in a long time. I always had some responsibility or another after I grew up. It feels great to be a child sometimes though. I just hope that I didn’t scare you.”

Shangguan turned her head and looked at him. He seemed to appear indifferent and calm again, his usual self. For some reason, her heart felt an ache all of a sudden.

No one was born cold. He must have had a difficult life as well.

Jing Yichen pulled the car into the parking lot. They got down and walked into the elevator together.

When they reached the sixth floor, Shangguan Ning walked out.

Jing Yichen’s low and sexy voice spoke from behind her, “Take the medicine according to the prescription. Come to find me on the 27th floor if you need anything.”

Shangguan Ning turned around, and Jing Yichen’s handsome, erect figure was in front of her. His eyes seemed brighter than usual, gleaming gently in a way that drew people inside, involuntarily.

The elevator closed slowly, separating the two of them. But it seemed that they had not parted at all.
