Chapter 6: Found, But Never Caught
Kai jolted awake with the sound of an unfamiliar alarm.
He placed his hand over his chest and took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing heart.
"Is that barking sounds mixed with engine revs?" he muttered, confused.
He quickly turned off the alarm and looked around the room. One thing was sure—he wasn't dreaming last night. He really did transmigrate to another person's body.
With a small smile, he got up from bed and changed into some decent clothes. Then, he went in front of the mirror to inspect his appearance, clicking his tongue when his hair continued to fall below his eyes.
"Maybe I should cut this," he said, twirling the black strands with his finger.
[Incoming Weekly Quest!]
[Don't get caught! Do not arouse any suspicion about your changed identity.]
[50 XP is available for the mission.]
[1 XP will be subtracted every time someone becomes suspicious of the host.]
Kai was pleasantly surprised. He never expected to be able to gain as much as 50 XP on his first weekly quest. But then, he wasn't really complaining. Seeing the 'noob' status on his window might look funny, but it was also a slapping reality that his current body wasn't familiar with basketball at all.
He saw a pair of scissors from his bedside table but shook his head. Cutting his hair might arouse suspicion. Based on all the photos on this guy's phone, he had been sporting this hairstyle for quite a long time.
Besides, it might be better to keep his features occluded to not bring any unnecessary attention to himself.
Kai smiled. How hard could acting like this guy be?
Kai left his room and saw Grandma Bingbing already eating at the dining table.
Grandma raised her eyebrows in surprise.
"You're awake? Well, that's a surprise. You usually wake up at noon since it's summer break," she said.
[-1 XP]
Alright, maybe it was hard after all.
"I was hungry," Kai said, trying to sound as cold as possible. Fortunately, that wasn't too hard to accomplish since he already had quite a deep voice. His timbre was definitely impressive, knowing he was in a 16-year-old's body.
A small smile appeared on Grandma Bingbing's lips. She was actually delighted to eat breakfast with her grandson. Although Kai was a pain to take care of, it was times like this when she was reminded he was just a young boy.
"Well, sit down then," she said, quickly making him a plate.
Kai sat down, his eyes slightly widening when a hot meal was placed before him. The only hot meal he got from his aunt's house was fried chicken during their restaurant hours. Aside from that, all he mostly had was their leftovers.
He took a bite of the simple omelet and almost groaned in satisfaction. However, he held himself back to avoid arousing any suspicion. Instead, he continued digging in like a hungered caveman.
Grandma Bingbing watched him in amusement, cutting a piece of her omelet and placing it on his plate when she saw he had almost finished his meal.
"This is yours, though," Kai said, about to give it back to the old woman.
However, she clicked her tongue and pushed his spoon away.
"I'm full, boy. You can't even eat your grandma's leftover food now?"
Kai pursed his lips to hide his smile. Then, he wordlessly ate the delicious omelet.
"By the way," Grandma said, making Kai stop mid-chew. "The school year starts on September 5th."
Kai nodded, not too shocked since it was the same day school started at his previous school.
He placed down his utensils and cleared his throat, wanting to know about the school he was going to attend. There wasn't a hint of his school on his phone, and he was also curious if he knew about the school's basketball team.
He didn't know much about other city's high school basketball teams, but he knew of one from Jilin City since they were front-runners during the Interhigh Nationals.
"So, uh, am I going to attend a new school?" he asked, opening up the topic.
"Naturally. You're already in upper secondary school," Grandma responded. "So, you're going to the institution nearest to our house. It has affordable tuition, too."
"I was a good student, wasn't I?" Kai asked with a joking undertone. He asked the question to gauge how he was as a student.
[-1 XP]
Kai internally cursed when he saw another deduction from his XP.
Grandma paused for a moment before bursting into laughter.
"Oh, that was a good joke," she said, wiping the tears of laughter with her sleeves.
"You have dozens of absences and barely even study. That's why Shizi High was the only school willing to take you in. Make sure you don't get into trouble, alright?"
Shizi High?
Kai stopped thinking of his XP for a moment to try and recall if the school was even remotely familiar.
However, after moments of thinking, Kai was certain.
He has never heard of it.
