Chapter 185: Recapturing the small town
Chapter 185: Recapturing the small town
Zhang Xiao Qiang thought for a bit. It’ll be more dangerous in the future and people will most probably die....He looked at Guo Fei and replied honestly: “Yes, the probability is huge, you can also choose...”
“Ok” Guo Fei turned and answered Zhang Xiao Qiang as he stared at him, then continued: “When I die, I hope that you will feed me to those monsters!” With that, he turned around and walked off with the red-dressed girl following him closely.
Guo Fei’s indifferent answer caused Zhang Xiao Qiang to feel dull. He turned and was about to return to his tent when he saw Old Frank walk over.
“Brother Cockroach, I realized that there were many more building materials that we will not use, but there isn’t enough cement, and although we have just found a cargo truck with a few tons, it isn’t enough!”
Old Frank’s report made Zhang Xiao Qiang feel troubled again. He found an old engineer and after having a discussion with him, they realized that the conditions to store cement was extremely demanding and any slight overlook would cause the cement to turn damp. In a normal situation, cement is stored in a warehouse close to a construction site and would only be taken out and filled into the vehicle on the day of usage. For the rest of the time, the cement would be stored away from moisture. Aside from cement, a few other more expensive materials are usually stored in the same warehouse, after all, construction sites are chaotic and messy.
This was the fourth day Zhang Xiao Qiang was out, he used the binoculars and looked at the small town in the distance, the cement problem was handed over to Three and his men to resolve the night before. Three brought the machine gun teams and 20 Combat Team Members with the guide of the engineers and found a warehouse stored with cement. There were many warehouses in the town and only a few of the managers and workers there had turned into zombies. With the three sets of machine guns, they cleared off a few hundred zombies and the remaining few were wiped out with the rifles.
Aside from finding cement, they found a few detonators and explosives used for cutting into mountains. Just by using one electric generator and fuel, they found one completely full warehouse. This caused Three and his team to become haughty. They believed that so long as they did not encounter any Type 2 Zombies, they could handle themselves. Of course, there was Shangguan Qiao Yun by the side for support. Zhang Xiao Qiang realized that Shangguan Qiao Yun’s ability was only limited to a rifle, if she were to encounter a D2 that was unafraid of bullets, she would be useless. Even if she could aim at its eyes, the D2’s eyelids could deflect the bullets. Even if she aimed right into its mouth, its teeth could deflect the bullets.
After doing nothing for the entire past day, Zhang Xiao Qiang could not tolerate the boredom. He thought about the town where they found seeds. They had already cleared half of the zombies inside and two zombies that were evolving into Type 2s. Upon thinking about the sausage and bacon inside the restaurants and on the supplies and goods that the homes had stored, Zhang Xiao Qiang’s heart heated up. He brought Yang Ke’er as well as a few Combat Team Members and moved to a location near the town to check if they could kill off the remaining zombies.
From the outside, the town looked extremely desolated with faintly discernible zombie figures loitering around the streets. The zombies do not make a sound, this quiet and small town was actually filled with zombies, giving off a gloomy and sinister vibe.
Ultimately, Zhang Xiao Qiang decided to arrange the battlefield at an empty space at an opening to the side of the town. Following the decision, 30 odd men dressed in brightly colored clothes brandished their shovels and started working on the ground, digging up and filling up black sandbags, forming up a black defensive wall with a 50 cm wide and long pits formed in the ground. These men who worked enthusiastically were the strong and capable men captured by Zhang Xiao Qiang. Under Zhang Xiao Qiang, they ate for two full days and even managed to enjoy a hot bath with the precious clean water. With the base running smoothly, wasn’t these factors the reason why they had to fight zombies at the risk of their lives in the apocalypse world? Some of them harbored anger towards Zhang Xiao Qiang in their hearts, if he had directly said that by following him, they could eat their fill, have proper showers and have a secure base, it would have been a guarantee that everyone volunteer to follow him, what was the use of the guns to scare them to the point of peeing in their pants?
Zhang Xiao Qiang felt pleased watching the men putting their heart into their work. After obtaining their meals, these men became as docile as sheep. Being unable to tolerate their stench and that they had managed to move a portion of their clean water over, he allowed these 200 odd men to shower and have a new change of clothes. Zhang Xiao Qiang was unwilling to give out their WWII Uniforms, so he found clothes inside abandoned homes and gave it to them. These clothes came in all forms, old-fashioned Chinese tunic suit for old people, old cotton-padded jackets, exercise clothes, brightly-colored and trendy clothes worn by youngsters and even lady outer jackets. These people were not particular about the clothes, one of them was a young man not even at the age of 20, perspiring freely while digging the ground was dressed in a navy blue Chinese tunic suit. If he was matched with an old man’s cap, he would practically look like Zhao Benshan*. One muscular middle-aged man with a full beard was the one dressed in a female red outerwear. It was slightly small and became rather tight on him, but he did not care. The man that was close to Zhang Huai An’s age was dressed in a colorful exercise jacket that made him look a few years younger.
After waiting for them to finish their work, Zhang Xiao Qiang took a look and inspected their work. He kicked the protective wall made out of the filled sandbags. The wall that was built upon multiple layers of sandbags was sturdy and firm with a crisscrossed pit at its front. Zhang Xiao Qiang figured that it was enough to obstruct the zombies and the terrain was wide enough for their guns to have ample angle space to fire in. Finally, the three heavy machine gun teams installed the machine guns on specially constructed platforms. The riflemen carried their rifles and took positions behind the protective wall and inspected their firearms while the mortar group made their preparations further back.
With the preparations going smoothly, Zhang Xiao Qiang looked at Yang Ke’er. Yang Ke’er was extremely moody and looked as though she had no battlefield awareness at all. She stood in front of the Land Rover, dressed in rose red windbreaker while carrying the little girl that had a wide smile and looked around. Ever since Yang Ke’er saw the little girl after her shower, she took a liking for her. At that moment, she went over and hugged the little girl, who was obedient and adorable, earning Yang Ke’er’s feelings. Whenever Yang Ke’er had any nice snacks or toys, she would find the little girl. Even when sleeping, she would hug the little girl. Now, even when they were about to kill zombies, Yang Ke’er still wanted to hug the girl. This made Zhang Xiao Qiang extremely pissed but he was lazy to talk to her. Fortunately, the little girl’s mother was in the camp helping the chef, if she knew that her own daughter was dragged by Yang Ke’er to the frontlines, she would have most probably gone mad. Behind Yang Ke’er, Shangguan Qiao Yun saw Zhang Xiao Qiang looking over at them, then walked towards him with her M1 Garand.
“PONG...”
A soft sound came out a few seconds later.
“Rumble....”
A regiment of flames erupted at the entrance of the town. Three to five minutes later, the zombie horde started to appear. Wang Chong stood behind the wall with his left hand raised and his right hand wielding a brand new bayonet. He used the bayonet and drew a small line on his arm, then turned the blood towards the direction of the zombies and waited for them to smell him and pounce towards him. Simply put, Wang Chong’s meal treatment was now the same as Zhang Xiao Qiang and Yang Ke’er as a way to compensate him. But even so, many people went up to Wang Chong, desiring to swap positions with him. Wang Chong naturally refused all of them. If no one wanted such a job, it would be considered an unfortunate thing. But if everyone wanted it, it definitely would be a good thing!
