Aiming to be the perfect butler for my lady

Chapter 87- Death

Chapter 87- Death

[Logan's POV:]

This is weird. Sitting in a random place with those people whom I barely know, except for Sasha, I was contemplating. Well, this definitely wasn't the place to be so deep in thought, but the matter was concerning.

Earlier, when I was fighting against that imp, I conjured my wings—something I had only done once before when I ended up getting betrayed by my party members, and they abandoned me inside a cave. At that time, I had to fight against a demonic goblin which helped me realize my angelic traits. And today was the second time.

Sasha even said that I summoned a strange luminescent armor on my shoulder that healed my arm. This was indeed strange.

It has been two times so I think now I know how this works. My powers can only be triggered in front of demonic beings. And that's a very good trait...except for the fact that unless I am fighting a demonic beast I would remain an average. Someone who gets pinned on the ground by a Princess...

"I am not looking at you." Seeing those accusing eyes on Alatia, I instantly raised my hands and surrendered.

She looked away, not even caring if I actually was looking. Scary.

Her attitude towards the others and her butler remains in stark contrast. She saw everyone with shades of suspicion and caution while that handsome guy was the only kind person alive for her.

Biased.

"What happened, Logan? You are staring at Your Highness pretty intently?" Hearing Sasha's words, I panicked and instantly snatched my eyes away. Damn, I wonder if I look disgusting in her eyes now.

"I was just wondering what the limit of her magic is. Have you seen her getting exhausted even once even after chanting so many complex spells?"

Sasha's eyes sparkled as she shifted to sit beside me and said, "Not at all. The speed of her spell activation and the magic-body coordination she showed was incredible. Almost made me kneel and pray to her."

I smiled helplessly at the girl who likes to admire strong and talented people. And I agreed with her on this one.

I used to consider the children of the nobles to be weak and full of themselves. Although Alatia possessed the second trait, she, by far, wasn't weak.

*RUMBLE*

Feeling the ground trembling I frowned and instantly got up on my feet. Following me were Aron and Sasha as well.

This was the sound of something huge advancing toward us. I pushed Sasha behind my back and faced the direction from where the alarming sound was rising.

Suddenly, out of the shadows, the familiar figure of the short brown-haired girl emerged, shooting in our direction. Her eyes were closed and she was definitely beaten up.

Aron moved to catch her before she could have crashed on the ground.

My attention didn't remain on her for long as I saw what made my eyes stretch wide.

*Grrr*

The several-foot-tall monster peeked from the darkness, its red eyes giving off an aura that cannot be compared to the beings we have faced until now. Its hulking frame is covered in thick, scarred skin that resembles cracked, dark stone. Its two massive horns curve upward from its forehead, sharp and jagged, gleaming with a menacing glow.

There was no doubt about it that this being....this demon was an S-rank.

For the first time in my life, I felt fear.

The huge monster stepped forward, its massive boulder crushing feet nearer us, yet I was unable to move.

"Aron!" Sasha shouted as I realized that Aron had charged forward.

"Aron, no!" I tried to stop him but it was too late.

Aron struck his fist into the leg of the monster, with everything he could muster. Both his fists glowed fiercely, and a mighty roar escaped his throat.

The twenty-foot-tall monster felt something crashing against its shin, and yet no reaction arrived other than a mere scratch.

"IYEEEEEEEHHHH" Aron raised his hands, planning to attack the Oni again...however, it was a futile attempt as the monster easily snatched Aron off his feet with such pace that was practically impossible to trace.

With dread I looked at what the Oni intended to do by clenching its hand which was holding Aron.

"GAHHHH! HELP!!" He cried, but I was so shocked and terrified that I couldn't move my feet at all.

Just when the Oni was about to crush Aron, frost began to spread across the monster's arm and it froze its hand which was clenching Aron, as well.

I turned toward Alatia and found she had used a great deal of magic by freezing everything in the path between herself and the disaster.

The Oni's lower half was frozen under a thick layer of ice and for the first time since its appearance, I felt I had a chance to retaliate.

However, I was hasty in making a judgment.

*CLINK*

With a flex of its wrist the monster snapped the ice and the cries of Aron subdued in the next moment as the Oni crushed the life out of him.

My body trembled seeing that broken and lifeless body of someone I shared the classroom with, currently lying dead on the ground.

Sasha threw up seeing that beside me, but I didn't have the strength to react properly.

I used to think that I have trained enough to face any danger in the world…however, I was severely wrong. In front of the true danger, I was nothing but an insect who can only get crushed under the stronger one’s feet.

First Alatia and now this demon….I believe this was my destiny from the beginning.

*KHUKUH*

The demon grinned feeling the trepidation we were showcasing as it stepped forward, completely disregarding Aron’s body.

Alatia suddenly raised her hand, intending to channel her magic to form another spell, however suddenly a bone crushing force descended on us and everyone including Alatia fell to the ground.

*BLANK*

My mind was no longer functioning properly. W-was this bloodlust coming from a single creature?!

I can't even move a finger under such force!

I was feeling helpless and couldn't find a way to retaliate…until my eyes landed on Sasha. She was just inches away from me so I was able to glance at her.

She looked pale and her eyes rolled back. Her condition was not good….not good at all!

“Fuck! Get up already!” I have already lost one companion. I can't sacrifice my friend’s life just because I remained lying on the ground like a coward!

With sheer will force I pressed my hands on the ground and while gritting my teeth I pushed myself.

Every fiber of my being was crying to just remove this barrier.

“Huh?!” But suddenly, the bloodlust disappeared and I ended up pushing myself a little more than what was required—resulting in me leaping away from my previous spot.

While being airborne, I looked at the Oni, and found a majestic figure of a shrouded person standing on top of the monster….

….or should I say, dead monster.
