Chapter 7
As soon as Ji Fei and Qin Xian appeared, the strange atmosphere in the room was broken, and everyone turned to look at them.
The butler stepped forward to take the coats from the young master and his wife.
"You're back," Qin's Mother said, immediately standing up nervously from the sofa upon seeing the two enter. She approached and gently took Ji Fei's hand, carefully observing their expressions.
Qin's Father also looked over anxiously, but maintained an air of authority as the family patriarch, remaining outwardly stoic.
This morning when Ji Fei was taken away, Qin's Mother had worriedly questioned Qin Xian.
Qin Xian had only coldly told his mother not to interfere this time.
Qin's Father had just sighed, letting his son handle everything. After all, Ji Fei had made a major mistake this time, and if their son didn't address it, he truly wouldn't be able to command respect.
The worst-case scenario they had imagined was divorce.
They hadn't wanted their eldest daughter's family to visit today, but their daughter seemed to have suffered some grievance of her own. She had called in a panic, wanting to come home as soon as possible to discuss something, so they had no choice but to let them come.
Who knew their daughter and son-in-law would also bring them such explosive news.
Ji Fei followed the interaction pattern from her memories, nodding indifferently, appearing aloof and self-absorbed, as if she didn't understand social graces.
Qin Xian didn't mention anything else either, first greeting his elder sister's family.
Ji Fei curiously glanced over.
On one long sofa sat four people.
An older woman with somewhat harsh features was hugging an 8 or 9-year-old boy, clearly doting on him. The boy clutched a Rubik's cube in his hands, looking around uneasily. He seemed rather frail.
Next to them sat a slender man wearing gold-rimmed glasses. Though his face wore a smile, he appeared cold and distant.
Beside the man was a woman with a somewhat forced smile, but her features looked quite warm and gentle.
Qin's Father and Mother didn't want to inquire about Qin Xian and Ji Fei's situation in front of everyone, intending to deal with their eldest daughter's family's matter first.
But then they heard an elderly, imperious voice say, "So the second son's couple has divorced? Why come back together if you've divorced?"
The atmosphere instantly chilled.
"Mom!" Qin Yan immediately spoke up to stop her. But raised as a proper young lady, her voice lacked any force.
She looked worriedly towards Ji Fei.
Her husband Li Zhi, however, remained silent, as if the matter didn't concern him, allowing his mother to speak such inappropriate words.
Qin Xian frowned slightly, but maintained his manners as he replied, "We haven't divorced, so naturally we came home together."
At this, Qin's Father and Mother looked over in delighted surprise. Finally some good news.
Li's Mother asked doubtfully, "The upper-class circles are all saying she made a mistake..."
Qin Xian's expression turned displeased. He was about to explain when Ji Fei suddenly spoke up beside him, "When did the Li family enter upper-class circles? You're even privy to insider gossip now?"
The Li family had been ordinary, with Li Zhi only considered a young talent for his success in studying medicine. In recent years, they had managed to save up a bit of capital by partnering to open a private hospital with help from the Qin family, but were far from reaching the level of high society.
But some people don't like hearing the truth. Li's Mother's face turned ashen, her voice trembling as she spoke.
"What did you say?! How dare you insult our Li family!"
Ji Fei put on an innocent face and waved her hand, saying, "You've gotten oversensitive in your old age. What did I say wrong? How was that insulting your Li family?"
[I am insulting you, I am insulting you. Putting on airs like a wolf with a fox tail. Who do you think you are?]
Hearing her curse so directly in her mind, Qin Xian immediately decided not to speak up.
Since Li's Mother had been impolite first, Qin Xian naturally wouldn't let his wife suffer for the sake of superficial harmony.
He even pulled Ji Fei to sit down and talk slowly - standing for so long must be tiring.
But as soon as they sat, from Qin Xian's angle he saw the shocked expressions on Qin's Father and Mother's faces across from them.
That expression...
Qin's Father and Mother were dumbfounded. Had they hallucinated? That arrogant statement was in Ji Fei's voice, but it seemed she hadn't opened her mouth!
Qin Xian's eyes changed subtly. He immediately looked towards his elder sister Qin Yan, only to see her also staring at Ji Fei with a bewildered expression.
Meanwhile, the battle between Ji Fei and Li's Mother continued.
Li's Mother was now fuming with rage, the wrinkles on her face becoming somewhat fierce. "As expected of someone with no manners!"
This statement instantly darkened the faces of the Qin family members present.
Let alone the fact that the original Ji family had been their family's longtime friends, Ji Fei had been raised in their household for several years and was now married into the Qin family, considered one of them. How could they allow this old woman to lecture them?
Qin's Mother was about to retort, but Ji Fei beat her to it.
"Indeed, I was never taught how to accommodate those beneath me." After saying this, Ji Fei deliberately looked Li's Mother up and down, disgust written all over her face.
[You're the one with manners, always insulting me to my face, constantly cursing me to become a neglected wife so you can introduce your relatives' daughters to Qin Xian. You ugly old witch, your thoughts are as beautiful as your face.]
Although Ji Fei would occasionally act erratically when it came to matters concerning Qin Xian in the past, she had never behaved this way towards others. Usually she was just difficult to get along with, mainly ignoring and not engaging with people.
This was the first time she had vented her anger on the spot. So not only were the Li family members stunned, but even the Qin family was shocked.
Of course, what stunned the Qin family even more was that they had heard Ji Fei's 'inner thoughts'.
Qin's Father and Mother looked at each other in astonishment, realizing they weren't the only ones. Then they looked at Qin Xian, who shook his head at them meaningfully, confirming that it wasn't just their imagination.
So that's how it was - apparently every time Li's Mother came to their house, she was this nasty to their daughter-in-law. How utterly shameless.
Qin's Father and Mother, who had initially thought Ji Fei might be going too far in speaking to an elder this way, now completely took their daughter-in-law's side.
Hmph, don't even think about cursing our son and daughter-in-law to divorce!
Just then, Qin Yan, unable to contain her shock, blurted out in amazement, "Ji Fei, you..."
"Elder Sister!" Qin Xian suddenly interjected, his piercing gaze seeming to prevent something.
But to the others, it appeared that Ji Fei had insulted Li's Mother, Qin Yan wanted to stop her, and Qin Xian had warned her off.
Qin Yan's mind was in utter chaos, and she immediately didn't dare mention the strange occurrence.
Li Zhi, who had been silent until now, became somewhat angry, as Ji Fei's comment about 'accommodating those beneath her' had stung him.
Supporting his mother, who was on the verge of fainting from anger and could only stammer "you, you, you", he looked at Qin Yan with displeasure.
A cold light flashed across his icy glasses, silently instructing her. After all, this kind of shrew-like squabbling scene didn't require his intervention - it would be embarrassing.
Qin Yan felt torn, but in the end could only say to her mother-in-law, "Mom, don't be angry. Ji Fei is still young and naive... she doesn't mean any harm."
The 24-year-old Ji Fei almost laughed at Qin Yan's attempt at peacemaking.
But Li Zhi was dissatisfied with Qin Yan's performance. His gaze turned sharp as he looked at her, already showing signs of reproach.
Qin Yan instinctively felt anxious and lowered her eyes to avoid his gaze.
Qin's Father and Mother couldn't bear to watch anymore, not wanting their daughter to be in a difficult position. Qin's Mother took the initiative to speak, "Alright, Mother-in-law Li, don't take offense at the younger generation. My daughter-in-law is in a bad mood today and spoke too bluntly."
The way she said it showed extreme favoritism, essentially mocking Li's Mother again. But unlike with Ji Fei, now that Qin's Mother had spoken this way, no matter how angry they were, the Li family couldn't argue with her.
They could only mutter under their breath.
"Hmph, we came to share good news today, but some people just had to ruin the mood."
But no one paid attention to her, choosing instead to ignore her and let her stew in her own awkwardness.
Qin's Mother turned to speak kindly to Ji Fei, "You've come back so late, have you eaten yet, Feifei?"
Ji Fei got goosebumps at being called "Feifei," as she had never experienced such an intimate nickname without actual kinship. However...
[Qin's Mother is really nice.]
When Qin's Mother heard this, she immediately became excited. After all, Ji Fei rarely showed closeness to them, always seeming to maintain a distance. She hadn't expected Ji Fei to think of her this way.
She must be a shy child, not good at expressing herself.
When Ji Fei shook her head to indicate she hadn't eaten yet, Qin's Mother immediately asked, "What would you like to eat?"
Ji Fei replied, "Anything is fine."
Qin's Mother called out directly, "Nanny Zhang, please prepare three dishes and a soup for Feifei, just make the dishes she usually likes. Thank you for your trouble." After saying this, she affectionately held Ji Fei's hand and said, "That Qin Xian, bringing you back so late without feeding you first. You must be starving."
Qin Xian, standing nearby, twitched his mouth and said, "Mom, I was with her, and I didn't eat either."
Qin's Mother, upon hearing this, casually added, "Bring a portion for the second young master as well."
Qin Xian: ...
Ji Fei wanted to laugh, but seeing the glance Qin Xian shot her way, she didn't dare.
Suddenly, a plate of cut fruit appeared beside her hand.
"Have some fruit to tide you over," Qin's Father said in a steady voice, naturally pushing forward the fruit plate meant for guests.
Ji Fei expressed her thanks. [Qin's Father is also very attentive to the younger generation. They really are a gentle couple.]
Qin's Father straightened his posture.
Qin Yan, hearing Ji Fei's thoughts and observing her parents' interesting behavior, felt her gloomy mood lift a little. But soon she found herself struggling to breathe under two disapproving gazes.
She knew that her mother-in-law and husband were displeased with her uselessness, feeling she had been neglected by her own family. But she knew her family didn't mean it that way.
Noticing his elder sister's predicament, Qin Xian's eyes flickered slightly.
He glanced at the child who had been shy and preoccupied with fiddling with a Rubik's cube the entire time. The child looked somewhat insecure and withdrawn, but judging by the nearly completed cube, not unintelligent.
He and his third brother used to enjoy playing with Rubik's cubes when they were young too.
Recalling what Ji Fei had said earlier about having some gossip, he spoke up directly: "Who's this child?"
