Chapter 82: Self-deception
Chapter 82
Yu Sheng couldn't accept that when they were intimate, Li Zhen was thinking of another man.
He wanted to wait until the day she truly fell in love with him.
He was greedy and arrogant to this extent - he wanted her soul, her whole heart.
Yu Sheng pulled himself out from his memories back to reality, but the ache in his heart didn't lessen one bit.
Tomorrow was Mother's birthday banquet, very important. He couldn't allow his emotions to spiral out of control at such a critical juncture.
Yu Sheng forced himself to calm down.
When he returned from Finland in his senior year of university, telling Mother about Li Zhen's existence, Mother was never able to accept Li Zhen.
Uncle, Mother's only kin who hadn't returned home in years, had agreed to advise her, and so succeeded halfway.
Yu Sheng walked around the front of the car, wanting to drive back to the company, but saw Zhou Chaowen standing blankly next to the car.
Yu Sheng's dark eyes were icy cold, his expression calm. "How much did you hear?"
He would only lose control in front of Li Zhen. Facing others, he was always steady to the point of impeccable.
Zhou Chaowen was afraid they would fight, so he followed to see the situation. He didn't expect to overhear this matter.
Zhou Chaowen's mind was in chaos. "Brother Sheng, you're deceiving Sister Zhen. This isn't right."
"Chaowen, you must remember..." Yu Sheng approached Zhou Chaowen, putting a hand on his shoulder, his tone certain and not up for questioning, "The one who saved her is me, the one she loves is also me. Before, now, and in the future."
The hand on his shoulder exerted force.
Bringing an intense oppressive feeling.
Zhou Chaowen broke out in a cold sweat, knowing this was Yu Sheng's warning to him, but he still couldn't help speaking up. "Brother Sheng, you're only fooling yourself. The one who saved Sister Zhen is someone else..."
Zhou Chaowen had just opened his mouth when he was immediately interrupted.
"There is no one else. If another person who saved her appears one day..." Yu Sheng got in the car and stomped on the gas pedal, his gaze devoid of warmth as he looked ahead.
"Then he can only be a dead man."
The icy words drifted away with the car.
Zhou Chaowen stood frozen in place, unable to collect himself for a long time.
In the employee cafeteria of Honghai Corporation, Wang Peng lazily yawned after eating.
It was that happy afternoon nap time again.
Lately Wang Peng had been busy following Lu Yanming, so only noon felt like it belonged to himself.
"Director Wang, let's go." Lu Yanming tapped the tabletop with his fingertips.
Wang Peng got up and the two walked out.
Passing by a dining table, Wang Peng halted his steps. "Oh, Manager Zhao, how come it's just you alone? Director Yu is busy again and didn't eat?"
Wang Peng was quite concerned about Yu Sheng's health.
He was the only workaholic in the whole company. He couldn't work himself into the ground.
Otherwise Wang Peng would have to find another competent marketing director up there.
"No, Director Yu went back to campus today, he's not at the company," Zhao Yan replied.
Lu Yanming, who had already walked two steps away, paused.
"Oh, that's great. Director Yu should relax and get out more, not be cooped up in the office every day." Wang Peng nodded satisfied.
After Wang Peng left, Tian Pingwei grumbled discontentedly, "What do you mean alone, am I not a person?"
After complaining, he quietly asked Zhao Yan again, "Uncle, our company is so people-oriented, can I also go take care of my own affairs in the afternoon? Today I also want to..."
"You wanna fart and eat it?" Zhao Yan fiercely glared at his very capable eldest nephew. "That's Director Yu. Of course Boss Wang manages in a people-oriented way. If it were someone else, you try it!"
Having said that, Zhao Yan glanced at the message on his phone and got up. "Don't eat anymore, go back to the office. Director Yu asked me to send a file to the company entrance for him. He's going out to discuss business this afternoon, we'll go with him."
Lu Yanming returned to the office and sent Li Zhen a message on his phone.
He typed on his phone: Did you run into any acquaintances when you went back to campus today?
Deleted it, then typed again: What are you up to?
Deleted again.
Lu Yanming threw his phone on his desk and knitted his brows, tugging at his tie.
He picked up his phone again and sent a message. [How was the performance?]
Li Zhen replied very quickly. [Extremely good. My junior schoolmates are very capable, it comforted my heart.]
The corners of Lu Yanming's perfect lips unconsciously curved up. [What time are you coming back? I'll come get you.]
[I'm already on my way back, almost at the company.]
[So fast?]
[The performance was only half a day. I ate lunch then came back.]
Lu Yanming got up and left the office.
Lu Yanming: [How long until you get to the company?]
Li Zhen: [Five minutes probably. No traffic jams at noon feels really nice.]
In the car, Li Zhen looked at the messages feeling it was strange. Lu Yanming asked her in such detail.
Replying back and forth, it really seemed like a warm casual chat between a long married couple.
Five minutes later, the taxi slowly drove up and stopped at the last red light before Honghai Corporation.
Li Zhen looked out the window and saw a familiar figure standing in the distance under the blazing sun.
Lu Yanming wore a crisp light gray long-sleeved shirt, tall and straight without a single crease, the pure gold cufflinks on his wrists glinting.
Even just standing there silently, there was an aura of unattainable nobility beneath his gold-rimmed glasses.
It was precisely things untouched by dust that made one want to tease them.
Li Zhen snapped a photo with a "ka-cha" and opened Lu Yanming's messaging window, clicking send.
[There's a handsome guy by the roadside. Boss Lu, teach me how to strike up a conversation with him?]
After Li Zhen sent the message, she looked up out the window to see Lu Yanming's reaction.
He took out his phone, first glancing in the direction of Li Zhen's car, then lowered his head, long fingers tapping the screen.
"Ding."
A message came in.
Li Zhen opened it.
Lu Yanming: [It would be difficult. His looks are quite good.]
Li Zhen couldn't help smiling.
Li Zhen: [Boss Lu, I was just joking earlier. When I get off the car later don't greet me, go about your business.]
At the Honghai entrance, Li Zhen didn't want to appear too familiar with Lu Yanming.
Li Zhen didn't receive another message from Lu Yanming after that.
The traffic light turned green and the taxi drove past, stopping at the Honghai Corporation entrance.
Li Zhen got off the car, sweeping her eyes fleetingly over Lu Yanming then swiftly looking away again, hurrying forward.
But the man behind her was tall with long legs, catching up to her in a few strides.
Li Zhen was startled and looked back. "Boss Lu."
She tugged her hand free, whispering, "Go about your business..."
Lu Yanming placed an iced Americano in her hand. "I just bought this for you next door."
The cool, refreshing sensation slowly dissipated the stuffy summer heat. Li Zhen looked at the coffee in her hand, her mood complicated. "You were waiting for me on purpose by the roadside?"
Their casual relationship had only been half a day without seeing each other, yet Lu Yanming was suddenly being so nice to her again.
Could it be because...
"To get in my pants again, Boss Lu, aren't you trying too hard?" Li Zhen sighed, feeling the pressure was too much.
Ever since she said to wait a month, he had been so attentive.
A trace of soft laughter spilled from Lu Yanming's throat. "Compared to your past efforts, I'm still not doing enough."
Li Zhen thought about the enthusiasm with which she had pestered Lu Yanming every day previously, and her face instantly turned red.
She stubbornly brazened it out. "See, Boss Lu, you have to own up when you go out into society. Who told you to ignore me before?"
"So now I'm out of my reach?"
"That's not what I meant. But really not possible recently, have to wait a month." Li Zhen's gaze was evasive.
In the roadside car.
Yu Sheng moved to sit in the backseat, Tian Laiwei sat in the driver's seat to drive.
The sharp-eyed Tian Pingwei excitedly said, "Director Yu, look, isn't that Li Zhen!"
Beside him, Zhao Yan's heart nearly stopped when he looked over.
That was indeed Li Zhen.
But there was also Boss Lu!
Did this excellent nephew of his not have a brain! Not have a brain!
Why point this out to Director Yu!
