Chapter 31 The start of the war
---
Void and Louyan departed shortly after the auction. The reason Void encountered Louyan was that the higher-ups wanted someone to keep an eye on him. After all, Void was a semi-legendary existence, powerful enough that a single outbreak could kill millions.
"Have you completed your investigation?" a shadowy figure asked Louyan.
Louyan bowed lightly, not daring to meet the figure's gaze. This was a god—specifically, the God of Shadows. It seemed the gods were finally awakening.
"My lord, yes. I used what you gave me, but it shows no sign of him being involved with those people, though it malfunctioned shortly after," Louyan replied, presenting a now-destroyed amulet.
"Hmm, your task is done. Stay low for now," the God of Shadows responded and then vanished.
Louyan discarded the amulet and walked away, blending into the crowd as if nothing had happened.

Days passed, and the Hans (formerly the human race, renamed to avoid confusion with other human races across the multiverse) were abuzz. Their general race chat had been active, with many discussing their plans and saying their farewells if needed. Some were tagging the top ten to talk, but since their last interaction with the general audience, all of the top ten had remained silent.
Meanwhile, in their private chat, the top ten were finalizing their plans. Void had been more active here, bored from waiting in the city. Linkir, now an obedient slave to Void, had been fetching whatever he needed and feeding him information from outside. On occasion, Void would release Linkir to hunt for souls.
Unlike demons like Void, Aerons needed to constantly hunt for souls, as it was akin to their food.
For Aerons, a small hunger side effect was imposed for balance, boosting their strength. The stronger an Aeron became, the more control they had over their hunger.
The world had been eerily peaceful, the quiet so intense that even commoners knew something big was brewing beneath the calm. Wars between kingdoms had ceased, and even sworn enemies paused their hatred. It became even more evident when the monsters in the forbidden zones grew oddly docile, halting their attacks.
Days crawled by in silence, creating palpable tension among all creatures. Everyone was waiting—waiting for the brewing volcano to erupt. And today, it finally happened.
---
**Doom... Doom... Dik... Dik... Dik...**
Across various countries, kingdoms, and cities, an overwhelming number of monsters emerged, their ranks resembling an infinite number of dots. The higher-ups were in a panic. They had never seen a beast tide of this magnitude. It became even more terrifying when the monsters from the forbidden zones appeared, with the weakest among them at the demigod level, accompanied by numerous Rank 2 monsters.
Many wealthy creatures had planned to flee until a decree was sent to the various churches. They were instructed to join the fight against a greater threat. The question that haunted everyone's mind was: **What could possibly unite the gods and monsters against a common enemy?**
---
At the Church of Light, a massive round table about 150 meters in length sat at the heart of the church. Around the table, various figures wore solemn expressions.
"A few days ago, my daughter Ariya returned and shared what she faced," said the general of the Church of Light, Ariya's father. "During the attack by the rebels, they believed they could kill her and reveal some secrets. They are summoning a powerful creature, one they claim is even stronger than the God of Light."
A shocked murmur spread through the room. Each of those present held high rank within their respective churches—generals and popes alike.
"Impossible! The God of Light is a god-king. No one is stronger than him!" one general argued.
"He's right! What nonsense are you spouting, Duchen?"
"Have you lost your mind?"
"Or perhaps your daughter misheard them."
"They're bluffing!"
The generals erupted in a heated debate. It wasn't that they didn't believe it—it was just that such a thing was impossible. No one could surpass the God of Light. A pope raised his hand, silencing the room.
"Before you arrived, we tested Ariya. She was neither poisoned nor mentally compromised. You may be right—they could be bluffing. But perhaps they aren't. We have more pressing matters to attend to," the pope stated.
"Do you remember the cracks that appeared on the statues of all the gods in the churches a month ago?" asked the Pope of the Church of Shadows.
The generals nodded.
"Our gods were killed," said the Pope of the Church of Light.
A heavy silence followed. The generals were in shock. They couldn't believe it—their gods had actually died.
"What... what killed them?" Duchen stammered, his voice shaking. Sweat dripped down his face as his expression grew more horrified. His eyes widened in disbelief, his body trembling uncontrollably. The other generals shared similar reactions.
"They weren't truly killed," another pope explained. "They self-destructed to halt the attack of beings from other worlds."
"So... we won?" asked a relatively young-looking general, a glimmer of hope in his voice. The other generals leaned in, eagerly awaiting the word "yes," but instead, they received the answer they feared most.
"No, we didn't. In fact, the divine plane was destroyed as a result," answered the Pope of the God of Wind.
"It's over," a general muttered, slumping into his seat. The room filled with the generals' auras, now uncontrolled and unstable. Despite their long life spans and stamina as demigods, they suddenly felt weak and vulnerable.
Duchen watched them in amazement but, seeing the calm demeanor of the popes, he knew there was more to the story. And he was right.
---
"Relax. The gods are eternal. They will be reborn. But due to the destruction of the divine plane, they face a problem and need our help to construct new bodies," the Pope of Wind said.
"Great, I knew it!"
"The gods are eternal!" a general laughed loudly.
"What's required?"
"We will do anything the gods need."
"Yes, we're listening."
"It's not difficult. We just need to sacrifice all of our Chosen," the Pope of Light said indifferently.
"Yes, agreed."
"That's fine."
"That easy? Hahaha."
Most of the generals smiled and nodded in agreement, while the Popes shared rare smiles. Only one general, Duchen, remained serious.
"How will we sacrifice the Chosen?" Duchen asked, his expression grim.
"Aah, do we need to spell it out? By killing them, of course," a general from the God of Poison chuckled.
Duchen glared at him but looked toward the Popes, hoping for a different answer. Instead, they disappointed him.
"Not only will we kill them, but their blood will be collected in a pool. Their bodies will be drained and burned," the Pope of Fire added, chuckling.
"Impossible!" Duchen stood up and slammed his fist onto the large table in anger.
"How dare you!"
"You dare question the gods?"
"Are you foolish?"
"How dare a lowly servant defy the divine order?"
"This traitor should be executed!"
"Enough," the Pope of Light commanded, his voice silencing the room. "It's understandable, given that your daughter is also one of the Chosen." He paused, looking around the table. "As a father, it is hard to sacrifice your child. And considering your dedication to the church, your loyalty is unquestionable."
Duchen's body relaxed slightly. Maybe, just maybe, his daughter would be spared. But his heartbeat quickened, the sense of dread not leaving him.
"But," the Pope of Water interjected, "your daughter will still die. Even one missing Chosen will weaken the new body of the gods. Would you prefer billions, trillions of humans to die, or a hundred Chosen sacrificed to save the rest?" Her words, though calm, carried a weight that suffocated everyone present.
"No, absolutely not!" Duchen shouted, clenching his fists.
"You hypocrite!"
"How can you refuse?"
"Are you unwilling to sacrifice your daughter for the sake of our lives?"
"You should be stripped of your rank!"
"Imprison him!"
The generals—his comrades—stood against him, now advocating for the death of his daughter, the same daughter they had once cared for like their own. Duchen saw the gleam of satisfaction in the eyes of those jealous of his success, their hidden smirks revealing their true feelings.
"Sit down," the Pope of Light said, his voice now cold and ominous.
Duchen looked around at everyone in the room, a sadistic smile forming on his face. He had dedicated his entire life to the Church of Light, and this was how they would repay him? How the gods would repay his service? By killing his only daughter.
"Come on, why are you so upset? You can always make another one," a jealous general mocked.
That was the final straw. In an instant, Duchen appeared in front of the general, grabbing him by the neck and lifting him off the ground. Before he could react, multiple generals kicked Duchen away, sending him crashing into the wall.
Boom!
As Duchen staggered to his feet, the Pope of Light spoke again, "Because of your loyal service, I wanted to give you a chance, even after your outburst. But your repeated transgressions and this act of violence against your peers leave me no choice. You shall be executed immediately."
"Seconded."
"Agreed!" echoed fifty voices.
One by one, the Popes and generals stood up in unison with the Pope of Light. Duchen, kneeling on the ground, looked around at the people he had once called comrades. His love and dedication to the church and the gods slowly turned to hatred.
"Kill him!" the general whose neck had been grabbed ordered.
Over a hundred generals, all at the demigod level, charged at Duchen. It was overkill for a single demigod.
"I see..." Duchen muttered, his aura beginning to rise. "I detest myself for serving you hypocritical cowards."
A surge of power erupted from him—Duchen had broken through to the False God level, a fact he had kept hidden.
His newfound aura was so intense that the generals closest to him were instantly killed, while those further away were gravely injured. The Popes, though unharmed, wore shocked expressions.
Duchen vanished in the blink of an eye.
"Find him, kill him, and bring his daughter here alive," the Pope of Light commanded. A shadow behind him distorted as multiple figures, all at the False God level, appeared—one of them even stronger.
"Yes," their leader said before they disappeared into the shadows.
---
Meanwhile, Ariya, Duchen's daughter, was seen gasping for air, wearing thin training clothes that highlighted her toned body. She braced herself on her knees, exhausted.
"I have to... get stronger," Ariya muttered, frowning as she prepared to start training again. Just as she was about to rise, her father appeared before her.
When he left, he had been in full general's armor, radiating dignity. Now, he was bloodied, his armor shattered, and his upper body exposed.
"Dad?" Ariya rushed toward him.
"We need to leave, now," Duchen said, not allowing her a moment to speak before picking her up and vanishing from sight.
Not long after, five figures appeared where they had been.
"After him," their leader commanded, and the pursuit continued.
