Volume 2 Chapter 86: The Sewers
"Can we really trust his words?" One of the residents of the slums questioned. It was a week since Keith had made his declaration. Everyone remembered his words.
It was like a dream.
"We have to hope," Hugo interjected. There was no point if they didn't hope. It was something they couldn't lose.
They had lost hope before. They knew about the Marquis's work on trying to solve the problem.
He brought hope for them that the slums would be alright. But that never happened. He fixed some of the slum's problems. But it wasn't enough. There weren't enough jobs for everyone to work.
That was how the slums continued to exist.
They had lost all hope. Their lives would continue to be like this till the end. But now, a new hope came. The Marquis's son stated he would solve the problem!
It was something unbelievable. Keith was only a child. But the look on his eyes caused him to shut up. His eyes were serious. It was unwavering.
He was going to place his hopes on him. As they were talking with one another,
"Everyone! One of the knights of the Marquis has come! It seems he's talking about jobs!" Someone roared out! Hugo's eyes widened when he heard that.
Jobs? Hugo and the others didn't hesitate as they dashed towards where it was. There were a few knights sitting at a table,
"As the fourth master stated, we are looking for people to hire! They will be cleaning the streets and the sewage. This will last for eight hours, and it will be every day! You will obtain three silver a day!"
"..." Their eyes widened as they heard that! They didn't even hesitate as they raised their hands!
"We want to do it!"
"Please! I want to work!"
"Please line up here! The maximum number of people we are taking is 100 people! Also, we need everyone to line up and tell us what strengths and experiences you have!" The knights added.
When that was said, people were split into two lines.
The knights began to take notes on every one of their strengths and weaknesses. It took two hours for everything to finish. But it was enough,
"The people who are enrolled in cleaning the sewers, please follow me to get the tools. The knights will teach you how to clean the sewage," The knights stated as they brought them over.
Hearing this, the people were shocked but excited. The knights handed the people their uniforms. It was a white one-piece suit.
They also handed something to cover their mouths,
"Wear this so there isn't any sewage stuck on your clothing," Like that, they entered the sewage.
"We'll teach you how to clean!" The knights started to show them how to do it. The workers were attentive as they stared at the knights.
The young master wasn't lying to us! They remembered Keith's words. He said he would give them jobs, and he meant it!
"Have you seen the workers in white?"
"Those people are from the slums. They have been cleaning the sewers and streets."
"No wonder it's so clean now!"
"It feels easier to breathe!"
"Young Master Keith wasn't lying when he said he would give them jobs,"
People kept talking about it like no tomorrow! That was because Keith's actions were enormous! 100 people got jobs in a week! That was a chunk of people in the slums!
The man himself who caused all of this was sitting in the library. He had a smile on his face.
This is good.
...
A few days ago, Keith was in front of William. Keith had devised a way to create more jobs for the people. And he went to William to discuss about it.
"Keith, what plan do you have?" William questioned,
"Father, the way to get jobs for the slums is through cleaning!"
"Hmm? Cleaning?"
"Yes!" Keith nodded, "I realized the roads are dirty."
As Keith walked, he noticed the roads were covered in dirt and garbage. It wasn't cleaned most of the time.
"Don't you think it would be better to have the roads cleaned and tidy up? It will make the town smell better and look nicer than before!"
"I see," William thought about it. It would make the town more pleasing to the eye for everyone. That will definitely help out.
"We can also create jobs for the sewers," Keith added.
"The sewers?"
"Mmhmm! Me, Mendel, Carter, and Michael went down-"
"Wait! You four went down to the sewers?!" William glared at everyone besides Keith, wanting an explanation!
"Father, I was the one who asked them to go. I wanted to see firsthand if there were any problems with the sewers," Keith had a hunch. If the roads were like this, what about the sewers?
"Was there a problem?"
Mendel nodded, "Yes, there was a problem with it. It seemed that there was a blockage due to the build-up of waste. If we didn't check it, there would have been a problem."
Diseases would occur if they left it as is.
"What?" William blinked his eyes when he heard that.
"Yes, thank goodness we checked. If it kept building up for a few more years, a plague might have happened," Mendel sighed.
"I see," William sighed in relief when he heard that.
"That's why I suggest having people go down there every day to keep the sewers clean," Keith stated. Their town should be clean enough for everyone to relax. Cleanliness is the way to keep everyone healthy.
