Chapter 55: Anomalies
Chapter 55: Anomalies
The monsters scream came from above, I managed to look up to see that my boss was as terrified as I was.
His entire body was shaking and it seemed like he wouldn't be able to move. I honestly didn't know what to do, I knew this monster was in a different world. I knew that I stood no chance, my life was in its hands.
I had no clue on where the monster was exactly, all I knew was that it was above. I didn't know if I even wanted to see the thing, I honestly believed it was best to simply wait here.
That was what we ended up doing, we were hanging off the wall for a full 10 minutes until the sounds of wings flapping were heard.
They sounded extremely distant, I assumed the monster was high in the air. My question was if it was the same monster who screamed or another.
My body felt exhausted and weak, I didn't know how much longer this could go on.
After 20 hard minutes of just waiting, I heard boss sigh in relief. I looked up at him to see he was already looking at me with a smile on his face.
"That thing is finally gone, that was pretty scary though huh? We could have both died if it had caught sight of us." By boss said in a whispered tone while looking at me.
"How do you know that things gone?"
"After it screamed I was able to track it down using mana, I'm shocked you were able to feel its presence before me though. Now let's going go my arms are killing me."
He started to climb while I followed suit. I really didn't want to move, but I had to force myself as staying here forever wasn't an option either.
My fear had calmed down quite a lot, although some still did linger it wasn't enough to stop my movements. My body did however feel heavy, the climb became much more difficult with all of this added fatigue.
I still never stopped; I kept climbing until we finally reached the top of the wall.
I climbed up onto the flat surface, it was a couple a feet thick so there was plenty of room. My boss was sitting down and started stretching his arms while I stood next to him.
I decided to stop enhancing my body so that my Ki levels could start regenerating.
With my eyes going back to normal I could barely see, it was like I was surrounded by complete darkness. This did start to scare me, but with what I just went through before this was nothing.
"How are you feeling?" My boss asked me.
"Fine now, but tell me are creatures like that normal around here?"
"No they aren't, if they were I would have died long ago. Monsters like those are basically anomalies, they are outside of the realm of what's considered normal. That is the fifth one I've seen in my career, so you can tell just how rare they are luckily."
"I see...."
"Well anyway below this wall is where we begin our search. This was a famous city years ago, now it's nothing but a thing of the past. This wall completely surrounds it which led to barely any monsters getting inside. I would say our main worry is other living beings, if we find any that is."
"How would you usually handle them?"
"I usually leave them be for the most part, but if a threat is posed than I usually kill them. I prefer to not fight at all honestly, whenever that happens I call it a good day."
"Okay, well do you want to have hand signals then? Talking may alert enemies nearby who we cannot sense, so it might be a good idea to have some."
"You know that's actually a good idea, here how about I raise a certain number of fingers for situations? That way we can easily remember them."
"That works with me."
"Okay one finger will be for breaks, two will be for if I sense danger, three if danger is close, four if fighting will happen, and finally my full hand would be that we run. Wherever I point my hand will be the direction we run as well, so will those be good enough?"
"Yeah they are fine, if we ever need more we can just add some."
"Alright then, now we will have to climb down this wall which is going to be a lot harder. Once we are finally on the ground again, we will start our search. I will look for the relics while you watch my back and our surroundings. I will help in the sensing part, but it never hurts to have a second pair of eyes. Also, if you do see something that picks your interest just tap my back and raise one finger. We will count finding something as breaks."
I was hoping there was some sort of easier way to go down this wall, but it would appear I was wrong. Climbing down is a lot more difficult than going up for many reasons.
The first being finding the holds, there much more of a pain in the ass to find especially when trying to find ones for your feet. The second being reaching downwards to the holds, there is a mental reluctance when you're reaching that far down. The third and most dangerous is the physical strain on the body, especially the knees and legs.
My boss had gotten up and started walking to the edge of the wall, I followed behind him and started to mentally get prepared for the climb.
My Ki was fully restored and my body felt fine for the most part. There was still soreness, but it was nothing major.
My boss started to descend the wall very slowly while looking down, I took this time to enhance my ears, nose, and eyes once again. With my vision getting better I started to look around, however only some of the wall come into view. The rest was the same misty darkness.
I started to go down the wall as well, I was looking down and following my boss's exact route.
It was grueling, not even 5 minutes in and I already wanted to stop. Even though my boss was slow in the decent, he was still going faster than me. I started to have a lot of trouble with reaching the cracks because of my short arms.
I would have to have one hand jammed in a crack while my other hand was down as far as it could go trying to reach a crack. My feet were also up smeared against the wall making my position awkward since I wasn't that flexible.
I was having an extremely hard time, the cracks on this side of the wall weren't the best either. Instead of jamming a fist which is a much more solid hold, I could only jam my fingers which hurt like hell.
I didn't want to enhance myself because it would only increase the risk, but my natural ability was really getting put to the test.
After 20 minutes I was really starting to hit my limit, I was looking down the entire time and still couldn't see the ground. Luckily my pace wasn't completely terrible, so my boss was still quite close to me.
'Fucking shit did this damn wall get fucking taller? How can I still not see the ground when we've been climbing for so damn long!' I was extremely irritated; my fingers were hurting like hell and I was feeling exhausted.
Luckily after a couple of minutes the ground was finally in view, however my boss stopped moving.
He had looked up at me and raised his right hand which had 3 of his fingers up.
'Shit.....'
