Chapter 47: Chapter 0045 Whose Phone Call
After the meeting, the directors all left.
The young doctors were still full of thoughts and unwilling to leave. They wanted to discuss more.
Zhang Lin, who was commended, was still excited.
“Tell me, when we do research, we can’t simulate clinical phenomena. This is a special allergy, finding an animal and injecting the same metal ions into its joint cavity. The synovial membrane won’t be allergic to these ions. We can’t reproduce the synovitis,” Zhang Lin approached and spoke.
Song Zimo said, “With your scientific thinking today, I can directly hand my national natural topics to you for application.”
Zhang Lin scratched his head with shame, slightly inflated, “I can try.”
As they were discussing, a nurse ran up and said that the infant who underwent finger reattachment had come back for a follow-up appointment. After X-rays in the outpatient department, they wanted to hold him in the ward. They wanted Doctor Yang to have a look before feeling at ease.
Yang Ping agreed, and the nurse dared to reply to the others.
When the child was brought up, Yang Ping went out to see him, followed by everyone else.
The woman was holding the child in the chair, arranging his clothes, while the man clumsily helped. Seeing Yang Ping coming over, the woman got up and the man bowed to greet Yang Ping, “Doctor Yang, thank you for your trouble. The outpatient doctor said the recovery was very good, but we are anxious and would like you to see. We have caused you trouble.”
Little Five hung the X-ray on the illuminator. Yang Ping saw that the child’s fracture was healed very well, much faster than an adult’s.
The steel pin for fixation of the fracture had already been removed in the outpatient department. Since the child was not cooperative during the examination, Yang Ping could only observe and try to judge the recovery of sensation and movement.
After playing with the child for a while and confirming that the sensation and movement were all recovered very well, Yang Ping felt relieved.
There stood Little Five, recording the child’s hand with his mobile phone. He collected detailed and complete data for every operation Yang Ping performed.
Yang Ping gave a few precautions, and the two thanked him again before leaving.
After they left, Yang Ping remembered the worker with a severed thumb who hadn’t come back for a follow-up after being discharged, causing him some worry. He was uncertain about the current situation.
Before getting off work, Yang Ping, Song Zimo, Little Five, and Zhang Lin checked the ward again. The department required two rounds per day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
Although the four were divided into two groups, they spontaneously blended into one. During each round, Song Zimo always led Yang Ping to check together. Also, they discussed collaboratively when receiving patients for surgery.
The worker with a comminuted fracture at the lower end of his humerus had completed the operation in the morning. The anesthesia had worn off, so Yang Ping guided him to begin active elbow movements.
“Doctor Yang, thank you very much, Professor Zhang, and you. Without you, this arm of mine would be wasted.” The patient expressed gratitude.
“You’re welcome, the key point is to move now. If you don’t move, the joints will become like rusty machines and become stiff. These few days, I will take some time to guide your exercise. You can practice by yourself after discharge once you learn,” Yang Ping said while guiding his movements.
At this point, the canteen aunt came over, put a bag of big steamed buns on the makeshift table in front of the worker’s bed, “Your ordered meal, four buns, still hot.”
Sanbo Hospital was well-managed, orderly. This was due to Dean Xia’s efforts.
Patients can order meals in the canteen. They can scan QR codes to order online, order by phone, or order from the ordering staff. An ordering staff member comes every morning to take orders for the next day. If admitted to the hospital the same day, patients can place orders at any time, but meals are provided by the canteen and cannot be chosen freely. Free-choice ordering is only possible a day in advance according to the menu.
“Will you eat this tonight?” Little Five asked.
The patient said, “This is very filling. The steamed buns in your hospital are big enough, one is equivalent to two outside, and it’s cheaper.”
The patient’s workmate, standing on the side, laughed heartily and put away the buns.
After guiding the worker’s exercise and checking the other rooms, several of the reattached fingers had very good blood circulation.
Finally done, they could get off work. They discussed going to a nearby restaurant for a meal. There was a good mutton hot pot shop nearby, and the four of them took off their white gowns and washed their hands.
As they walked out of the surgery building, they found that the hospital’s security checkpoint had been installed and was in use. Anyone entering had to go through the security checkpoint. If a person carried a knife or something similar, the machine would beep. Once the machine beeped, the security guard would immediately step forward and ask to see the item.
Yang Ping and the others were curious, so they stood by to see how this security checkpoint worked. A tall, burly security officer walked over.
This officer was the newly appointed head of the security department at Sanbo Hospital, personally interviewed and hired by Dean Xia. He was as burly as Xiong Sihai, the head of the emergency department. One glance at his walk, and it was obvious he had a military background. From then on, the three “strongmen” of Sanbo increased to four.
The officer inspected the security machine, opened his notebook, and asked, “How’s today’s situation?”
The security officer in charge of this checkpoint opened a box. Inside was a sharp knife with a sheath: “We found a knife today.”
The officer carefully picked up the knife, pulled it out from the sheath, took a glance, then reinserted it back into the sheath and threw it back into the box. After recording in earnest, he said: “We have already found several knives in just one day of operation. What are patients doing with these knives? Remember, don’t be careless, each time a knife or other offensive weapon is found, take down the name and ID of the individual, and ensure it’s entered into the security system. Immediately report any suspected illegal activities. Those who are caught twice will be discreetly trailed by assigned security, and those caught three times will be blacklisted. Dean Xia has already banged the table at the meeting and told you men to be vigilant.”
“Yes, Captain, I understand,” the security officer replied.
After the captain finished recording, he said, “As for your wife’s job, the Human Resources Office has already arranged for her to be a cashier at the outpatient clinic. The hospital will provide training. You can focus on your work here, and if there are any difficulties, just let me know.”
The security officer grunted in reply, a look of joy lighting up his face as he tightened his belt.
Little Five and Zhang Lin purposely walked around the security gate a few times, asking the security guard, “Would nail clippers or scissors trigger it?”
The security officer laughed and said, “No.”
Then they looked at the knife in the box, “They really found a knife?”
The security officer said, “Only this one was found in the Surgical Building, a few more were found in the entire hospital today.”
After inspecting the security checkpoint, everyone chatted and walked. On the way, they saw Dean Xia, Dean Sun, and the office director. The leaders were inspecting, with Dean Xia making gestures, Dean Sun nodding, and the office director recording. It must’ve been related to the security system.
At the mutton hot pot restaurant, the four of them found an empty table to sit down.
“I don’t drink,” Song Zimo gave a heads-up in advance.
“Whoever doesn’t drink pays the bill, that’s the rule from now on,” Little Five said.
“Fine, I’ll pay,” Song Zimo didn’t mind.
“Zhang Lin, do you drink?” Little Five asked.p>
“I don’t drink, am I here to drink milk tea?” Zhang Lin answered.
Little Five said, “It seems lackluster for a bunch of guys to have hot pot together. Boss, call over your instrument nurse; Zhang Lin, call your pediatrician out, and Song Zimo, your Maserati.”
“What’s the point of calling them? It’s way more unrestricted when it’s just us guys drinking. If we bring women along, can we still drink properly?” Zhang Lin objected, as a waiter brought over a few bottles of beer and prepared to open them.
“What if there’s an emergency?” Yang Ping suddenly remembered, and the waiter’s bottle opener stopped mid-air.
“It’s Thursday today, there’s an in-house doctor on duty in our department, and Old Tian is on standby at the Trauma Emergency Center. Our second team, I’ve just sent a WeChat message asking them to hold fort,” Song Zimo assured.
“Let’s drink, we haven’t in a long time. We work and perform surgeries together daily, rarely do we all gather. If we’re not on the operating table, then we’re too exhausted and resting,” Zhang Lin urged the waiter to open the beer as the hot pot soup bubbled and all the ingredients were served.
Zhang Lin dumped the ingredients into the pot with a splash, Little Five distributed the drinks, and Song Zimo’s phone rang.
Everyone’s hearts clenched. No way, right?
Doctors dread the sound of their phone ringing during their break. Once it rings, no matter who’s calling, their hearts give a wrench.
Whose call could it be?
Song Zimo lit up his phone.
